Norma Jean Sauter

Norma Jean Sauter, 90, of Portland Mills, passed away Monday, July 17 at her home.

She was born on March 15, 1927 in Indianapolis to the late Michael Denton White and Mary Lorraine (Watson) Baker.

On March 15, 1947 in Indianapolis, she married William L. Sauter. William passed away in January 2000.

Norma graduated from Emanuel High School and then attended Indiana University and Indianapolis University.

She worked as a food editor for Saturday Evening Post, and as a secretary for Mertz Engineering where they made the first space capsules.

She served as president of Indiana Business and Professional Woman's Association.

She was a board member of Portland Mills Christian Church, where she was a member.

She was very proud of her property's history, which was part of the Underground Railroad, and the pre-historic Indian encampment on her properity.

In her later years she enjoyed painting, reading numerous books and her family.

She is survived by her children, William M. (Debra) Sauter, Portland Mills, and Laura Jean (John) Dobson, Manhattan; grandchildren Adam French, William Sauter, Nicholas Sauter, Trenton Sauter, Felicia Romalia, Thomas Dobson and Michael Dobson; 10 great-grandchildren and stepbrother Norman Baker, Greenwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Susan Lynn French and sister Mary Louise Lane.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 21 at Portland Mills Christian Church, 11130 E. Harbison Rd., Rockville, IN 47872 with Pastor Carl Huxford officiating. Burial will follow in Portland Mills Cemetery.
