Nine-year-old Benjamin Zellers of Greencastle finished first on Friday in the regional qualifier of the Drive, Chip and Putt competition at the Kampen Golf Course at Purdue University.

His score of 91 points (for nine total golf shots) advanced him to the state qualifier for the event on August 13 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.

Zellers was one of 18 competitors in the boys’ 7-9 age division.

Finalists of this event, through state and larger region qualifying, finish at Augusta National next spring.

The top three golfers advance from regional qualifying, along with the top two golfers advance from the state qualifier.

A joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and The PGA of America, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf.

Zellers, son of Todd and Deb Zellers, played in three events on the Hendricks County Junior Golf Tour this summer — winning all three.
