City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to five dispatches and one medical run.

• At 6:33 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 605 S. College Ave. The second-floor alarm was determined to have been activated unnecessarily by the building air-handling unit, on which DePauw maintenance crews were working. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station.

• At 3:57 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a building fire at 3495 S. U.S. 231 North. GFD initially received a call from the owner of the residence saying a small spot on the roof was on fire. Though the homeowner had already extinguished the flames with water, he/she wanted GFD to check the work and ensure no hot spots remained. GFD found nothing of concern, noting the resident had already removed a 12-by-12-foot section, just as GFD would have done.

• At 5 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 101 E. Hanna St. GFD found nothing out of order except that the alarm panel in the building showed water flow in the basement. However, no water was flowing, prompting GFD to reset the alarm.

• At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to reports of an unauthorized burn in the area of 1010 Avenue C. Crews soon located the illegal burn at 1014 Avenue C and informed the resident of city fire ordinances before extinguishing the flames, which comprised of lumber and other construction materials deemed unfit for burning.

• At 8:33 p.m. on Sunday, GFD assisted the Floyd Township Fire Department with extinguishing an oven fire at 4351 N. CR 300 East. The oven fire progressed into a kitchen fire once flames began igniting cabinets and other nearby appliances. The fire was well under control, however, soon after receiving notice by crews from several neighboring fire departments (including crews from Fillmore, Bainbridge and Roachdale, among others), saving what could have progressed into an overall structure fire.
