Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan R. Adams, 59, Coatesville, had just negotiated a turn from County Road 525 North onto County Road 825 East on a 2003 Harley-Davidson FLH Series motorcycle.

Adams told Deputy Matt Biggs a cat ran into his path and he swerved to miss it. He then lost control and left the road, where the bike ended up on its side.

Adams suffered minor injuries to his left hand but refused an ambulance, saying he would go to a medical facility in a personal vehicle.

The motorcycle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Jaise A. Brinkman, 34, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 40 about 1,000 feet east of County Road 25 West in a 1996 Ford truck when he hit a deer.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 8:01 p.m. on Monday, Cody R. Carpenter, 24, Spencer, was westbound on County Road 1000 South, approaching a turn in a 2006 Chevrolet HHR.

Carpenter told Deputy Anthony Brown he was going too fast to make the turn, instead leaving the road and hitting a utility pole.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 8:48 p.m. on Sunday, Eric Blue, 43, Cloverdale, was southbound on State Road 243 just north of County Road 700 South in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, hauling a trailer and boat.

Blue told Deputy Riley Houghton that a northbound vehicle crossed into his lane of travel and he moved left to avoid the collision. As he did so, the trailer wheels left the road, pulling the truck off the road as well.

Upon leaving the road, the trailer and boat hit a tree, leaving the entire unit disabled. All three were towed from the scene.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 6:54 p.m. on Saturday, Judith K. White, 73, Terre Haute, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. Richard W. Severe, 55, Jamestown, was also northbound on a 1984 Harley-Davidson FLH Series.

White told Deputy Houghton she was going about 30 mph with her hazard lights activated because she had a donut tire on her car. Additionally, she said she had activated her left turn signal.

Severe said he was northbound behind two vehicles that had passed White’s car. He said he attempted to pass as well, but the car then turned left without warning. Severe said he did not have time to brake or swerved, colliding with the driver’s side of White’s car.

Severe was wearing a helmet. He had an open wound on his left forearm and also complained of pain in his left shoulder. Operation Life transported him to Putnam County Hospital.

The motorcycle was towed from the scene. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
