City pool to close for season Sunday

Thursday, August 3, 2017

With another early start to school this year -- today for some, Monday for others -- and a lifeguard staff heading back to classes in droves, the Greencastle Aquatic Center will close for the season on Sunday.

Following one last pool party scheduled to end at 8 p.m. Sunday, the city pool will be buttoned up for the year.

“After soliciting final days from our staff, we have determined we will not have enough lifeguards to stay open beyond Sunday,” Park Director Rod Weinschenk said in his director’s report presented to the Park Board Thursday.

Many of the new and extremely young lifeguards recruited this year participate in fall seasons of high school sports, further compounding the issue.

The Park Department tried to keep the pool open past the start of school a year ago, but attendance was minimal and staying open longer became less than cost-effective.

While the pool, which opened for the season on May 26, will close Sunday, the Bob York Splash Park will remain open until the weather dictates otherwise (when consistent 70-degree temperatures are no longer happening).

Last year the admission-free splash park closed in early October.

Meanwhile, Thursday night’s Park Board meeting was canceled due to the lack of a quorum and was rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7.
