After narrow misses, Greencastle’s Jonny Newgent wins make-up feature

PUTNAMVILLE – Lincoln Park Speedway played host to a super-sized slate of racing on Saturday night with a full card of racing as well as three make-up features from a rainout on July 22.

In the weekly show, Brent Beauchamp, a veteran of Lincoln Park Speedway’s 5/16th-mile surface, dominated on his way to a second sprint car victory of the season at LPS. Coal City’s Cole Parker held off the competition after a caution with two laps remaining in the UMP Modified main event.

Steve Peeden continued to dominate in the UMP Super Stock division with another victory and Terre Haute’s Travis Heramb picked up the bomber A-main to cap a busy evening.

After the completion of hot laps, the rained out races took to the track as the UMP Super Stock A-main and a pair of bomber features were on tap.

Greencastle’s Jonny Newgent has narrowly missed picking up a win on several occasions this season in the super stock division. This weekend he hit pay dirt as he started on the outside of the front row and brought home the victory over Kenny Carmichael Jr.

Newgent jumped to the lead at the start of the race and led the competition to the checkered flag with a flawless run on the top as Carmichael gave chase the entire way. Carmichael made a variety of advances in an attempt to find a way to the point, but Newgent held fast to the lead. Wes McClara came home third ahead of Dale Hayes and Steve Hollars.

In the bomber A-main it was Cody Wright leading wire-to-wire for the victory, skillfully managing lapped traffic over the final five laps for the win. Josh Foxworthy was a distant second as Wright won by a full straightaway. David Bumgardner placed third ahead of Tom Cox and Jordan Almanza.

The second bomber feature of the evening went to Danville’s Glen Ogden, who held off Coatesville’s Gary Hayden. Tyler Campfield crossed the finish line third ahead of Seth Powell and Kevin Kemp.

Twenty-one sprint cars were on hand to battle for the win this week as Tim Creech II, Billy Cribbs and Beauchamp picked up heat race victories as the feature field was set.

Kent Christian and Mitch Wissmiller started on the front row for the A-main with Beauchamp and Alec Sipes in row two.

When the field took the green flag, Beauchamp rocketed to the front and quickly pulled away to a comfortable lead ahead of Christian by lap five. Sipes was third, followed by Brazil’s Nate McMillin, who had moved into the third spot before a caution slowed the field on lap seven. Hopkins was on the move to the front after starting eighth overall.

The Brownsburg driver had advanced into a battle with Christian for third at the midway point of the 20-lap A-main. Beauchamp began to work through lapped traffic with seven laps to go, masterfully running three different lines as the track widened out. Beauchamp was on a rail over the final five laps, pulling away to win by a full straightaway as Hopkins advanced to finish second ahead of Jon Stanbrough and McMillin followed by Matt McDonald.

Twenty-five UMP Modifieds were on hand as RJ Pruitt, Sydney Landes and Paul Bumgardner captured heat race wins with Tyler Loughmiller winning the B-main.

Josh Boller was the early leader after five laps and was setting the pace ahead of Parker and Rob Brickert. Boller had built a sizable lead by lap 10 and narrowly missed a spinning lapped car that brought out a caution. On the restart, Boller briefly held on to the top spot before spinning out of turn one to bring out another caution.

Boller was forced to restart at the back of the field as Parker assumed the lead and did not look back.

Parker slowly built a lead of several car lengths over Brickert as Kenny Carmichael Jr. had zeroed in on the leaders and moved into fourth ahead of Landes. Carmichael and Bumgardner ran door-to-door with five laps remaining as Roy Bruce Jr. and Landes fought for the fifth spot. A final caution with two laps remaining opened the door slightly for the rest of the field.

On the restart, Parker got a strong jump on Brickert and was able to stay out front to pick up his second win of the season. Carmichael Jr. came home second ahead of Brickert, Bumgardner and Ed Roley, who started 18th.

Newgent and Doug McCullough were heat race winners in the UMP Super Stock division to set up the A-main field.

McCullough darted to the front through the first three circuits as Peeden gave chase ahead of a two-way battle between Newgent and McClara. A caution on lap four tightened the gap as the field geared up for the re-start.

After the re-start, Peeden rocketed to the top and drew even with McCullough by the sixth lap as Newgent and McClara ran behind them. Peeden pulled into the lead on lap eight as Newgent moved to challenge McCullough ahead of Cullen Goodman, Kris Starks and Kenny Carmichael Sr.

Once Peeden took the lead, he pulled away to a comfortable advantage on his way to a victory ahead of Newgent, McClara, Carmichael Sr. and Chucky Walden.

Twenty-five bombers took the green flag for the A-main after David Bumgardner, Heramb and Bob Farris picked up heat race victories.

Josh Litton led early in the 15-lap main event before Bumgardner spun in a challenge for the lead. Litton remained out front through the first six laps before mechanical woes forced him to the pits. Heramb assumed the lead and made the most of the opportunity.

Heramb went three-wide through lapped traffic on the eighth lap to stay out front as Jordan Almanza closed in to challenge for the top spot.

With five laps to go, Almanza dove under Heramb, but could not hold the momentum as Heramb pulled away late for the victory. Josh Foxworthy eventually slipped into second-place as Almanza placed third ahead of Wright and Megan Cavaness, who started 18th.

The Midwest Sprint Car Series will play $3,000 to win this weekend with modifieds, super stocks and bombers on the slate.
