After many years and 40K, young Eagles now have own field

South Putnam’s youth football teams needed a home of their own, and after two years of hard work the league now has its own field.

Located east of Central Elementary and north of the high school team’s practice field, the new South Putnam youth football field is ready to be used for the first time on Saturday morning.

Walker Mullin is one of several league board members and other volunteers who helped spearhead the project, which involved transforming property full of hills and valleys into a perfectly flat area with plush green grass ready for the future Eagles to utilize.

“This is a $40,000 project,” Mullin said. “It was completed with funds raised by our youth league, through sponsorships, donations and fundraisers — and also by the donation of services and labor from many of the individuals who worked on this project.”

The ground hosting the field was raised several feet with the addition of numerous dump trucks full of soil brought to the site. Mullin noted that several huge rocks weighing hundreds of pounds each were uncovered during the excavation and removed.

“We’re very proud to be playing our first games on the new youth league football field,” he said. “We offer many thanks to our great sponsors and donors who have made this possible.

“The creation of this new field is an important step in the continuing improvement of our football program at South Putnam,” Mullin added. “There was a great need to get the youth kids their own field and lighten the traffic and wear and tear on Mark Wildman field.”

The field has two sets of bleachers, with plenty of room around the edge of the field for spectators to bring their own chairs to view the games. A new concession stand building will also serve to offer refreshments and offer a place for storage of some league equipment.

“A lot of people have stepped up to make this youth football field a possibility,” he said. “This has been a long process, four plus years in the making, from an idea to reality. To get to the point where they will be able to play and practice on the new field is a huge accomplishment.

“I am very proud of the efforts of those involved to help us reach this goal,” Aker added. “This is a great addition to the South Putnam football program as it will benefit so many students as well as our community.”
