PREP ROUNDUP: Cub, Cougar girls get soccer wins

Thursday, August 17, 2017

LIZTON — Greencastle traveled to Tri-West on Tuesday for its season-opening girls’ soccer match and came away with a 5-1 victory.

The first half offered much opportunity for the new team to gain confidence with passing, dribbling, and shooting. At the half the score was 0-0 with Claire Gillen in as goalkeeper.

In the first nine minutes of the second half, freshman Kennedy Trigg and junior Erin Thomas each scored a goal. That duo either scored or assisted on all five Tiger Cub goals, with Trigg finishing with one goal and two assists and Thomas with four goals and one assist.

Greencastle coach Angie Weeks noted that excellent play within the midfield was led heavily by junior Gretchen Weliever and sophomore Kaitlyn Dibble. Weeks added that “dynamic” defensive action was led by senior Megan Friars and sophomore Catherine Weeks.

Freshman debuts on the defensive line came from Neva Brown, Katie White and Sydney Doan.

The Tiger Cubs will host Crawfordsville on Monday.

North Putnam 3, South Vermillion 2 (girls) — The Lady Cougars trailed 2-1 at halftime but came back to pick up the win.

Goalie Jada Stump came up big with a save on an important penalty kick just before halftime, a play which shifted the momentum back to the Lady Cougars. The young team stayed strong and scored two goals in the second half to win the game.

Stump made several great saves preserving the win, as Abby Spencer had the game-winning goal.

Spencer finished with two goals, with Cheyenne Graham scoring the other Cougar goal.

Kylee McCullough had two assists, and several freshmen contributed playing lots of minutes in their first high school contest.

South Vermillion 1, North Putnam 0 (boys) — The visiting Wildcats scored the game’s only goal in the first half.

“Led by a senior class of Alex Krominaker, Tyler Thompson, Caleb Duncan and Terran Wittig, the Cougars provided a very competitive game for the first game of the season,” coach Curt Krominaker said. “With several new players starting this season the boys have already started developing a nice passing chemistry. A number of near misses could have easily turned the game into a win.”

Krominaker thought his team had a great effort in the second half.

“The boys gave a great effort, especially in the second half, and dominated possession on the pitch,” he said. “We have worked on getting more shot attempts this season; we just have to turn the attempts into conversions.”

Volleyball

Danville 3, Cloverdale 0 — Danville won the varsity match by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18.

Leading the lady Clovers were Kenzie Stoltz, Tori Combs, Hailey Thomas and Hannah Rady.

The JV Clovers lost a hard-fought battle against the Warriors. In the first set, both teams were in a tie at 17 before Danville pushed an 8-2 run to finish the set. Serving woes were the major setback for the Clovers in the first set, but they used great defense to stay within striking distance.

The second set witnessed both teams fighting tooth and nail as Danville had a 20-19 lead before a serving run forced the Clovers to take a time out. The defense continued to force Danville mistakes but the Clovers weren’t able to get quality swings to put the ball away.

Golf

Danville wins triangular match — Danville shot a 208 at Clover Meadows on Thursday to defeat Greencastle and South Putnam.

The Tiger Cubs had a 219, while South Putnam shot a 240. Greencastle’s Macey Masten was the medalist with a 45. Anna Carrington led South Putnam with a 55.

“All the players had a hard time with the conditions,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin noted. “Hard ground and fast greens made shot making and putting difficult. Young, inexperienced players have a hard time knowing how hard to hit shots and putts, and thus making the scoring considerably higher than when playing on soft fairways and greens.”

Paquin is confident his young team will continue to improve.

“The more matches and different conditions they play the more they will improve,” he said. “It’s a long frustrating learning experience, but something every golfer experiences.”

Greencastle (219) — Macey Masten 45, Marin Nally 52, Bailey Shuee 61, Rose White 61, Molly Ramey 68

Danville (208) — Ross 47, Lucas 51, Tollison 52, Cochran 58, Shores 59

South Putnam (240) — Anna Carrington 55, Drew Steffy 56, L. Hazlett 63, Kate McCammack 66, Reagan Ladd 67.

In other golf:

North Montgomery 211, North Putnam 258 — The Lady Cougars hosted the Chargers on Thursday for their first home match of the season.

With Taylor Dixon still out with an injury and Abby Simmerman playing volleyball, the young team of four freshmen was all able to keep its scores under 70.

“All of the Lady Cougars continue to improve in pace of play, rules interpretation, proper swing tempo and chipping,” Cougar coach Linda Patrick said. “Overall the putting by all the players was very good, averaging 21. At this point, the team needs to concentrate on eliminating too many extra strokes getting to the green. This would involve learning how to choose the right club and know its distance, along with gaining more self-confidence and trust in their shots.”

The Lady Cougars will play in the Western Boone Invitational on Saturday.

North Putnam (258) — Brittany Bonifacious 64, Haylee Greene 64, Nyiah Goff 61, Grace Timm 69
