CLAY CITY — Cloverdale took a tough decision on the road against a veteran Clay City volleyball squad on Tuesday night, falling 25-14, 25-19, 25-14.

The Eels came in battle tested after going 2-1 at the Plainfield Invite on Saturday, defeating Greenwood and Terre Haute South before falling to Plainfield in the title match. Clay City used its experience to put the Clovers in a sizable hole to start both the first and third sets

In the opening game, Clay City jumped out to a 6-0 lead on kills by Ally Murphy and Lilli Langley. The Eels were aided by three hitting errors by the Clovers.

Clay City extended its lead as senior Addie Kittle posted back-to-back kills for a 13-6 lead midway through the game. Hailey Thomas drilled a kill along the sideline to get the Eels back within 16-8 and a kill by Justyce Monnett narrowed the gap to 16-11. However, the Eels relied on its senior core to get back on track.

A service ace by Jenna Ream and a kill by Avalee Jeffers extended the Clay City advantage on the way to a win in set number one.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair until late as both teams traded rallies.

A block by Tori Combs got Cloverdale going early in the game and Shaylee Swearingen came back with a kill by the Eels.

Thomas responded with a tip kill for the Clovers. MacKenzie Stoltz posted a kill to the back line as Cloverdale edged ahead 6-5. The set seesawed back and forth as teams traded points.

Cloverdale’s Stoltz served up back-to-back aces for an 11-9 Cloverdale advantage.

The set was tied at 13-all after a pair of aces from Stoltz and a kill from the Eels’ Jeffers. A kill by Combs tied the set at 17-apiece.

Clay City began to edge ahead late in the period as Tori Gard nailed down a kill. Thomas answered for the Clovers, but the Eels would serve out three straight aces from Madelyn Ames to take a 2-0 set advantage.

The Eels rolled early in game three, jumping out to a 12-0 lead as Jeffers posted a pair of kills and a block. The Clovers briefly recovered with a pair of aces from Hannah Rady, but the Eels would prove too strong in the final game.

Ames added another ace and Kittle, Langley and Jeffers drilled three consecutive attacks to secure the victory for Clay City.

Terre Haute North 203, Greencastle 207 — Macey Masten led the Cubs with a 47.

Paquin said that putting and chipping are still the major areas where the team can improve and thus lower our scores.

“Each course presents different problems and we have not learned how to minimize the effects to lower our scores,” he said. “The girls are working hard to get better and improve in the important skills to become a better player.”
