Sheriff’s Department

A Greencastle woman was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital following a single-vehicle accident east of Chadd Valley late Monday morning.

At 11:40 a.m. 33-year-old Lacy A. Wells was westbound on State Road 240 just west of County Road 500 East in a 2009 Honda CR-V.

Markings on the road indicated that Wells’ vehicle left the north side of the road before traveling down an embankment and continuing into the front yard at 459 E. SR 240, where it struck a tree.

The car came to rest facing northbound.

The impact entrapped Wells in the vehicle. Once she was extricated from the car by Fillmore Fire Department personnel, Operation Life transported her to the area of the Putnam County Humane Society, where a landing zone had been set up for a Stat Flight helicopter. She was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for the severe injury to her leg.

Deputy Jacob Harrington investigated the accident, with assistance from deputies Tanner Brown and Virgil Lanning, as well as Sheriff Scott Stockton.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

Sheriff’s department deputies investigated five other recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Matthew L. Stalcup, 35, Linton, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2000 Chevrolet S10, preparing to turn left into the Taco Bell parking lot in Cloverdale. Erin R. Bills, 33, Cloverdale, was also southbound ina 2011 Chevrolet Impala.

As Stalcup attempted to turn, Bills’ car rear-ended his truck.

A bystander told Deputy Harrington that Bills had been swerving “all over the road” prior to the crash. Harrington said she showed no signs of intoxication but admitted to being fatigued, having recently completed an overnight shift at work.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 9:54 p.m. on Monday, Megan S. Hodge, 17, Pittsboro, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2006 Nissan Altima.

Hodge told Deputy Robert Soilleux she swerved to miss a fox and lost control, hitting a guardrail on the south side of the road.

The driver complained of neck pain and was being treated by EMTs, but her father arrived on the scene and she refused further medical aid.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 7:23 p.m. on Sunday, Alec R. Pettit, 22, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 25 West near the intersection of County Road 300 South in a 2017 Mazda 6 when he hit a deer.

Sgt. Kyle Gibbons estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 1:05 a.m. on Saturday, Jake L. Powell, 17, Roachdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 about 1,000 feet north of County Road 1100 North in a 2007 Pontiac G6.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman reported that Powell apparently fell asleep at the wheel and left the road, entering a ditch.

The vehicle hit a drainage culvert, cuasing significant front-end damage and moderate damage to the rear.

Powell complained of minor elbow pain but declined medical attention.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,0001-$25,000.

• At 5:25 a.m. Joshua L. Reisinger, 23, Brazil, was traveling northeast on County Road 175 North in a 1996 Ford F250.

Reisinger told Capt. Tom Helmer he met an oncoming vehicle that was traveling left of center in the curve so he swerved right to avoid a collision. In doing so, Reisinger left the road and lost control, sliding into a tree.

The truck was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
