The Young Eagle Rally at Putnam County Airport Appreciation Days provided a chance for kids ages 8-17 to take a free flight with local pilots and those from around the region. One such visitor was pilot Larry Gruber (above) of Delphi, who gave 13-year-old Corbin Edwards of Greencastle a flight in his distinctive blue and yellow Varga Kachina. Flying in from even farther away was Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Ambassador Andy Miller, who flew his “Yellow Bird” in from Appleton, Wis., to educate the younsters on flight and give them an introduction before they took to the air. At least 200 children took part in the Experimental Aircraft Association-sponsored rally on the weekend, including one lucky passenger who got a ride in one of two biplanes that was on the scene Saturday.

  • I believe the young man in the blue airplane is more interested in his cell phone than what is going to happen when the plane takes off. There are far too many distractions for young people today.
