BRAZIL — North Putnam competed in the Northview Invitational cross country meet on Tuesday, with Caleb Duncan taking fourth place in the boys’ race and Anna Haste leading the Cougars by finishing fifth in the girls’ race.

NP coach Kevin Lutes thought all of his runners in the boys’ race went too fast in the first mile.

“We were able to hold on to finish third as a team,” he said. “I think they’ll get better with each run. We have many that are still learning how to race.

“Hopefully they’ll stick with it and mature as runners,” Lutes added. “They certainly have potential.

Haste and Grace Elmore, both freshmen, both finished in the top six.

“I love the fact that they push each other to improve,” Lutes said. “Madison [Trotter] had a good night as well.

“I’m proud of all our girls for placing third in the team score.”

Tennis

South Putnam 3, Danville 2 — The Eagles won both doubles matches and No. 2 singles to record the win at Danville on Monday.

“Our doubles teams made quick work of their opponents,” SP coach Johnny Briones said. “Despite the change of the lineup [due to Arnold being sick], they both played really well. No. 3 singles [Garrett Heavin] is steadily improving.

“Thomas Fanning struggled a little bit at No. 1 singles against a very worthy opponent.”

Briones was also proud of Ty VanSickle at No. 2 singles for going three sets to “seal the deal.”

The Eagles will host Crawfordsville on Thursday, then will play at Owen Valley on Saturday in the Western Indiana crossover match for fifth place.
