Soccer

Cubs keep rolling — The No. 11-ranked Greencastle boys’ team routed South Vermillion 7-0 on Thursday night.

“It was a strong victory with Greencastle dominating much of the play,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said.

Evan Crowe had three goals to pace teh Tiger Cubs, while Hector Lezama had two goals and an assist, Jakob Foss had one goal and two assists, Leo Weeks had a goal and Ben Parsonas and Dylan Kendall each had an assist.

“Hector Lezama had a standout game,” Sims said. “He played with his back to goal, moved the ball, got into channels and scored goals.

“Evan Crowe got a hat trick and continued his goal scoring ways.”

Sims noted that Jakob Foss “was in the right place at the right time,” creating two assists and scoring a goal himself.

“The defensive line kept them at bay 95 percent of the game,” Sims added. “They were overall dominant.

On Tuesday, the Cubs defeated West Vigo 5-2.

Jakob Foss opened the scoring from a driven ball across the box delivered by Crowe.

Ben Parsons would add a goal and Crowe found the back of the net twice.

Simon Foss converted a penalty kick that helped guarantee victory.

“The first 25 minutes of play was very productive,” Sims said. “After going up by three goals, the boys let off the gas a bit and let West Vigo back into the game.”

Sims noted that the penalty kick and Crowe’s constant pressure on the ball, which led to a late goal, were keys to holding on for the win.

“Evan had a standout game as usual,” he said. “The boys need to find a balance in their play. We need to constantly push teams, because if we let up we will give more skilled teams opportunities they will take advantage of.”

The Cubs play at Sullivan today.

Sullivan 9, North Putnam 0 (girls) — The Lady Cougars lost at home to Sullivan on Thursday evening.
