DePauw University School of Music faculty, staff and students will celebrate the start of a new year with a new addition to its seasonal programming. To the university’s annual Family Weekend festivities, the School of Music is introducing a Fall Gala.

Featuring performances by all of the university’s major student ensembles — band, choirs, jazz ensemble and orchestra — with works ranging from “Amazing Grace” to Leadbelly’s “Rock Island Line,” the gala-style concert will be presented Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Center’s Kresge Auditorium.

The culminating work on the hour-long program will be George Gershwin’s eloquent “Rhapsody in Blue” performed by the University Orchestra with faculty pianist May Phang.

“The DePauw School of Music faculty, staff and students welcome the entire Greencastle community to join us in enjoying a musical sampler of what the school has to offer this season,” invites Dr. Mellasenah Morris, interim dean of the School of Music.

“It has been a pleasure listening to rehearsals and attending the student’s first orchestra concert this past Sunday. From the high quality of that performance — and only three weeks into the semester — I am confident that Family Weekend will be a special occasion for everyone.”

General admission to the Fall Gala is $5. Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free thanks to season sponsors Judson and Joyce Green.

To obtain tickets online, visit music.depauw.edu. The venue’s box office, located at 605 S. College Ave., is also open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to every performance.
