Greencastle will be looking for its fifth-ever sectional title today in both boys’ and girls’ soccer.

The No. 6-ranked Tiger Cubs will play at 2 p.m. today in the Sullivan Sectional against West Vigo, a team they beat 5-2 on its home field on Sept. 12.

The Tiger Cub girls will battle the host Mounties at 7 p.m. in the Southmont Sectional. The teams played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 7.

While each team has won four previous sectional titles, Greencastle is seeking to win the crown in both genders for the second time — following a double victory in 2008.

Goalies Brody Watson, Claire Gillen and Ashlynn Guyer have been perfect so far in sectional play, as both teams have won a pair of shutout victories in the first two rounds.

On Monday, the Tiger Cubs shut out South Vermillion 7-0, scoring three goals in the first half and four in the second half.

Senior Evan Crowe scored three goals to pace the Cubs, while Hector Lezama added two goals and an assist, Jakob Foss had a goal and two assists, Leo Weeks had a goal and Ben Parsons and Dylan Kendall each added an assist.

The Tiger Cub girls played Monrovia on Tuesday night and recorded an 8-0 shutout.

The Lady Cubs scored three first-half goals. Sydney Doan scored the team’s first goal on a corner with an assist from Erin Thomas.

Thomas added five goals of her own, while Kennedy Trigg had two. Additional assists were from Trigg, Thomas and Corinne Buchanan.

Gillen had four saves and Guyer added two.

“The team has worked very diligently to make connections on the field,” coach Angie Weeks said. “Their positive efforts are paying off as the sectional season continues to unfold.”

On Thursday, the Cubs scored two goals in each half to shut out South Vermillion 4-0.

Thomas and Buchanan each had a goal in the first half. Buchanan’s was her first of the season, and came on an assist from Sydney Anderson.

Thomas and Trigg each had a goal in the second half, and Catherine Weeks had an assist.

West Vigo drew a first-round bye, and reached the sectional finals by defeating Sullivan 3-1.

Southmont also had a first-round bye in the girls’ bracket, and edged Cascade 2-1 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Previous Greencastle boys’ sectional titles came in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2015, while the Lady Cubs won titles in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Greencastle’s boys won the school’s only soccer regional crown in 2011.

The winner of each sectional advances to the four-team regional round next Saturday.

The winner of the Sullivan boys’ sectional advances to the Heritage Hills regional along with sectional champs from Evansville Memorial, Scottsburg and Washington.

The Southmont girls’ sectional champion will play in the Heritage Christian regional along with champs from Cardinal Ritter, Knightstown and Triton Central.
