DePauw remains undefeated with victory on ‘Old Gold Day’

DePauw’s defense held visiting Oberlin to just 11 first downs and 164 total yards and the Tigers picked up a 26-10 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Yeomen at Blackstock Stadium. The Tigers improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the NCAC, while Oberlin dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

DePauw’s Conner Mullin intercepted Oberlin quarterback Zach Taylor on the Yeomen’s first series and his return gave the Tigers the ball at the Oberlin 22.

Jake Tanner gave DePauw a 3-0 lead after booting a 28-yard field goal just 4:50 into the contest and, after the defense forced the Yeomen to punt, Andy Hunt returned it 58 yards to push the lead to 10-0 with 9:08 left in the opening stanza.

Oberlin reached the board with 9:47 remaining in the second as Michael Leshchyshyn booted a 37-yard field goal which capped an 11-play, 46-yard drive.

The Tigers extended the lead to 17-3 on their first possession of the second half as Jake Lasky teamed with Hunt for a 37-yard scoring pass. The teams then exchanged punts with Hunter Sego pinning Oberlin at its own 7 with a 40-yard boot. On the third play of the series, DePauw linebacker Harry Bell sacked Taylor in the end zone for a safety.

Following the free kick, DePauw put together a 10-play, 58-yard drive capped by Cam Haynes’ 1-yard pass on fourth down to push the lead to 26-3 with 11:18 left.

A a long kickoff return, Oberlin needed just five plays to cover 35 yards with Taylor completing a 9-yard score to Corey Fussinger for The Yeomen’s only touchdown of the afternoon.

DePauw totaled 292 yards including 193 on the ground as Lasky led the way with 84 yards on 17 tries. He also completed 9-of-10 passes for 87 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Hagan caught five passes for 26 yards and Hunt added three for 55.

Oberlin finished with 47 rushing yards against DePauw’s fourth-ranked rushing defense. Chuck Williams rushed for 49 yards. Taylor completed 12-of-25 passes for 117 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ryan Gleeson caught six for 19 yards.

Zach Williams and Matt Crupi each totaled six tackles in the win, while Williams, Matt Mitsch, Bell and Nate Orrison each had one sack.

Von Wooding paced Oberlin with 13 tackles with Anthony Allen and Jonathon Smith adding nine apiece. Luis Solorzano led the Yeomen with 1.5 sacks with Allen adding 1.0 and Jack Lesniak 05.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. NCAC contest at Denison.
