Volleyball sectional action begins tonight

Volleyball sectional action begins tonight at both sites where Putnam County teams will be playing, although none of them are competing until at least Thursday.

At North Montgomery, Greencastle is the only one of the six Class 3A teams with a winning record at 13-10 and has a 2-1 record against the rest of the field.

The Tiger Cubs drew a first-round bye and will meet Crawfordsville in Saturday morning’s second semifinal match.

Greencastle won at Crawfordsville on Aug. 17 in a 3-2 match. The Athenians won the first set 25-16, Greencastle won the second set 25-11 and the hosts came back to win the third set 25-23 before the Tiger Cubs put the match away by winning 25-17 and 15-13.

The Tiger Cubs also defeated Southmont 3-1 and lost 3-2 to North Montgomery in regular-season action. They have not played Lebanon or Benton Central this year.

Greencastle finished in eighth place in the Western Indiana Conference standings.

At Monrovia, undefeated and No. 1-ranked Covenant Christian of Indianapolis opens the Class 2A tourney tonight against Western Boone, the only other team in the field with a winning record.

Putnam County’s three teams in the field all start play on Thursday. South Putnam plays Cascade in Thursday’s opener, followed by North Putnam against Cloverdale.

The Eagles picked up one of their five wins this season against Cascade on Sept. 28 with a 26-24, 25-17, 25-21 victory.

Cloverdale and North Putnam met on Sept. 21, with the Cougars winning the first two sets and the Clovers coming from behind to take the final three sets.
