Remaining tourney action continuing this weekend

Post-season competition in boys’ soccer, volleyball, cross country and football continues this weekend for several Putnam County athletes.

Here is a look at each sport:

Boys’ soccer

Greencastle (16-1-2) will compete in the Heritage Hills Regional on Saturday against Silver Creek (11-6-2) in the second semifinal match.

The Tiger Cubs won the Class 2A Sullivan Sectional last week by defeating West Vigo in the championship, while Silver Creek won the Scottsburg Sectional by defeating North Harrison 3-2 in the finals.

The other semifinal match is between Washington (15-4-1) and defending Class 2A state champion Evansville Memorial (16-2-1), which has won 18 total sectionals (third-most in state history) and 14 straight.

The Tigers have won the most regionals with 16, are tied for second most semistate titles with eight and have won three state titles.

Their three non-victories this season all came against out-of-state competition, as Memorial tied a team from Webster, Mo., and lost to Lexington (Ky.) Dunbar and Chesterfield (Mo.) Marquette.

Cross country

Several runners will compete in the Ben Davis Regional on Saturday, led by three-time sectional champion Emma Wilson of Greencastle.

The qualifiers from the South Putnam Sectional (top five teams and top 10 individuals not on an advancing team) will compete with qualifiers from the Ben Davis Sectional.

Qualifiers from the Ben Davis Regional will advance to the Shelbyville Semistate. Runners competing from Putnam County will be:

Greencastle — Wilson, Sydney Kallem, Ben Gellman, Justin Berish and Ian Frank

Cloverdale — Lily Monnett, Chase Ashcraft and Rylan Hall

North Putnam — Caleb Duncan, Grace Elmore and Anna Haste

South Putnam —Austin Rumley, Karl Egold, Steven Schnepp, Dru Bottorff, Andrew Carr, Michael Crossman, Chelsie Edwards, Lillie Stein, Samara Young, Ally Nichols, Rachel Jones, Ally Menke and Addison Blaydes

Football

The Western Indiana Conference will decide its order of finish tonight with crossover games matching teams from each division who finished in the same position.

Sectional play begins next Friday night.

Volleyball

Sectional action started Thursday night at Monrovia for Putnam County teams, with Cloverdale winning its match to advance to the semifinals.

Greencastle will begin play at North Montgomery on Saturday.
