Thursday

•At 6:04 a.m., Douglas E. Sebens, 54, of Farmer City, Ill., was turning left from Walnut Street onto Railroad Street in Roachdale in a 2017 Peterbilt semi-truck registered to Greenwood Motor Lines, of Wilmington, Ohio, when he heard a snapping noise and thought that he had caught the overhead lines. Sebens stopped, stayed in the vehicle and called for help.

Deputy Soilleux reported that Duke Energy arrived on the scene to turn off the power and determined that Sebens had caught a TDS Communications telephone line that had not been hung high enough.

The telephone line, two utility poles and buildings of two nearby properties (108 Washington St. and 100 E. Railroad St.) were damaged. Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

There were no injuries.

Saturday

• At 5:30 p.m., Angela S. Young, 47, of Plainfield, was eastbound on U.S. 36 near its intersection with U.S. 231 in a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country when her brakes failed and she rear-ended Vicky L. Woods, 62, of Indianapolis, in a 2017 Kia Sorento.

Sunday

• At 5:36 p.m., Randall W. Swank, 42, of Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2000 Chevrolet Impala when a witness said he left the road several times before colliding head-on with a tree.

The vehicle was towed by Adam’s Towing. Deputy Freeman estimated damage at $10,001-$25,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to seven dispatches and five medical runs.

• At 3:28 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to reports of a tree on fire at 3540 S. U.S. 231. The tree originally caught fire due a nearby brush fire, which was extinguished well before the tree was extinguished as tree fires are notoriously difficult to put out. GFD utilized Engine #2’s ladder to spray water into the center of the hollow tree. Once extinguished, GFD returned to station at 4:19 p.m.

• At 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to unknown reasons at 109 W. Hanna St. GFD cleaned the alarm’s detector head before resetting. GFD subsequently returned to station at 6:14 p.m.

• At 6:12 p.m. on Saturday, GFD returned to 3540 S. U.S. 231 to spray more water into the center of the still-burning tree. Once satisfied with full extinguishment, crews returned to station 6:55 p.m.

• At 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, GFD performed a smoke investigation at 1210 Castlebury Dr. The smoke was reportedly caused by cooking on the resident’s stove, and the resident had already extinguished the flames before GFD’s arrival. GFD returned to station at 8:51 p.m.

• At 11:52 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 1542 S. Bloomington St. The alarm was determined to have been activated unnecessarily due to dust from nearby construction. GFD cleaned the detector head and reset the alarm before returning to station at 12:01 p.m.

• At 9:24 a.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to unknown reasons at 19 N. Indiana St. GFD reset the alarm before returning to station at 9:43 a.m.

• At 1:37 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to reports of a motor-vehicle accident at the intersection of Washington and Wood streets. GFD assisted Operation Life and removed any fluids/debris from the roadway before subsequently returning to station at 1:59 p.m.
