Charlie Hallam resigns CPD, purchases Chewy

Friday, October 20, 2017

CLOVERDALE -- Former Interim Town Marshal and Sgt. Charlie Hallam has resigned his position with the Cloverdale Police Department to accept a position with the Spencer Police Department.

Hallam also agreed to pay the town $800 to purchase K-9 Officer Chewy, after he said it would take at least a year for him to adjust to another handler.

Estimates of the dog’s value were between $600 and $1,000.

In answer to a question from Town Council member Gary Bennington, Hallam said he was not sure whether he’d be using Chewy at the Spencer Police Department or not.

The CPD is looking to hire another full-time officer in the near future.

  • First of all Charlie was basically forced out of the police department. The dog wasn't even purchased by the town. For someone who had done so much for this community he was definitely treated poorly. He should have been chief but, for some reason the treasurer thinks she holds say in every decision, this should have been brought to attention by the whole town. Actually, look at the last two chiefs hired in...not looking good, all based on "their" choices. Why did he have to pay the town for a dog that was strictly bought on donations??? The clerk and town manager...married that is nepotism. If you ask me all political decisions should be made by the town as a whole. Not bring in some random person to interview applicants, that process should never of happened. I hope he is much happier, but we lost an amazing officer, they will eventually see that. Until then more choices should be made by the town board but of course someone has some pull with that so maybe that doesn't help either. Start fresh, someone run for clerk and get a whole new board. They should be ashamed of themselves, of course this is the same lady that fired all the full time town employees so her pay wouldn't be cut because of insurance. Its always benefiting the same people... never the town.
