Scott Davis, chairman of the local 100 Plus Men Who Care of Putnam County chapter, announced its fourth and final meeting date of 2017 -- Nov. 9. The philanthropic group will gather at 5:30 p.m. at the Inn at DePauw.

Looking back on the past three years, Davis related, “This is an amazing group of men. Together, we will have awarded over $147,000 to 11 different local non-profit organizations. In addition, we have created a $50,000 Community Grants Endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation. That is a big impact.”

He also stated that SAWs was selected to receive its $12,800 donation at the August meeting. Doug Miller, a member of 100 Men and participant in Servants at Work (SAWs) in Putnam County, was the presenter. He explained that SAWs is a mission of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church.

“SAWs serves the physically handicapped in Putnam County by building custom, high-quality, removable and reusable wooden wheelchair ramps, steps and safety railings to provide freedom and assistance to citizens with handicaps,” Miller said.

SAWs projects are supported by grants and donations so that the handicap ramps are constructed completely free of charge and with no strings attached.

“For our guys to be able to assist citizens in gaining freedom from their handicaps and gaining mobility outside their home is a honor,” imparted Dave Murray, a board member of 100+ Men Who Care.

In January 2014, 100+ Men of Putnam County was created based two principals: 1) There were men who wanted to give back to the community but lacked the time associated with fund raising or boards, 2) Make it fun and easy.

Today, there are 128 members. In general, the men combine their $100 donations five times a year to make a collective contribution.

Board member Alan Zerkel remarked, “It’s really cool to know that my $100 donation will become a huge $12,800 check on Nov. 9 in only 45-60 minutes while basically attending a party.”

The organization is currently renewing and registering men for 2018.

Todd Lewis, one of the founding members identified why 100+ Men is still relevant. “We know from the nominating process that we have more local charities in need of our donations for programs and services.”

By prepaying before the end of 2017 you can take advantage of year-end tax deductions.
