Readings, performances at ‘Beginning Again’ arts event

Monday, October 30, 2017

Put on by the Greencastle Arts Council in collaboration with DePauw’s ArtsFest, Beginning Again will feature five authors and songwriters performing and discussing their work – in particular how they deal with starting something new or beginning again and how they recharge themselves before taking on new creative endeavors.

On the Friday, Nov. 3 program are author Chris White, whose novel “The Life List of Adrian Mandrick” will be released next spring; a reading from the late Rick Hillis’ posthumously published novel, “A Place You’ll Never Be”; talks and songs by singer/songwriters Angela Norris White and Gus Moon; and words from teacher/writer/publisher Donovan Wheeler.

White is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and fiction author, as well as an assistant professor in the English Department at DePauw University. Her most recent novel, “The Last Bird: The Life List of Adrian Mandrake” is about an anesthesiologist/birder willing to do anything to pursue the probably extinct ivory-billed woodpecker and escape his past. “The Last Bird” will be published by Simon & Schuster next April.

Before his death in 2014, Hillis taught at DePauw as well as Stanford University and had been a screenwriting fellow at Universal Studios.

His previous works include “The Blue Machines of Night and Limbo River,” which won the Drue Heinz Literature prize. A reading by his friend and colleague, Ron Dye, from Hillis’ posthumously-published novel, “A Place You’ll Never Be,” will be featured at the Friday event.

Wheeler is not only a popular AP English teacher, but also founder, owner, senior writer and senior editor of National Road Magazine. His presentation promises to be not only entertaining, but also educational.

Norris White is a singer/songwriter whose “music you can taste and lyrics you can feel in this diverse taste of Americana music. From the bitter sweetness of classic country, to the salt of Rockin’ Outlaw and Americana grit ... and somewhere in between, it’s all spicy,” according to Soundcloud, where her first album, Angela Norris White, is available.

Anthony Mullis, a.k.a. Gus Moon is a singer/songwriter whose “voice, both as a writer and a singer has a smile and a tear in it at the same time,” according to Jared Jernagan of the Banner Graphic. Mullis will discuss and perform tunes from his acoustic oeuvre.

In addition to songs and readings the evening will feature displays of work by regional 2-D and 3-D artists to be offered at the InteGREATive Art Show & Sale scheduled for Nov. 17-18. Light snacks and an open bar are also on tap.

The “Beginning Again” arts event will kick off at M2 (Music on the Square) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3. The event is free and open to the public.
