GPD warns of scam involving bogus Duke Energy calls
Greencastle City Police Chief Tom Sutherlin is warning local residents about the latest scam making the rounds in central Indiana.
Several businesses in town have received a phone call from an individual claiming to be with Duke Energy, the chief advised Thursday.
“The individual is telling the businesses that they are behind on their Duke Energy bill, and if they don’t pay it immediately their electricity will be shut off immediately,” Chief Sutherlin explained.
“As you already know this is a scam,” he assured. “Duke Energy does not call its customers demanding payment over the phone or else their electricity will be shut off.”
Duke Energy officials say they would never require payment via pre-paid cards and would give electric customers advance notice before their service is ever disconnected.
Duke advises that if you receive such a phone call, hang up, then call police and contact Duke Energy at the phone number printed on your utility bill.
