Sullivan picks up pair of big victories over North Putnam

SULLIVAN — The host Golden Arrows trailed for 19 seconds as their girls and boys basketball teams defeated visiting North Putnam in a West Division Western Indiana Conference twinbill on Friday night.

In the girls game, Sullivan scored the final 11 points of the first quarter, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 14-4 lead and cruised to a 55-25 victory over North Putnam.

Sullivan improved 3-6 overall, 1-1 in the WIC while the Lady Cougars fell to 3-7, 1-2.

“It was good to get a win. It was good to get a conference win,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “The girls did a good job of finishing the first quarter and we took off from there.”

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Sullivan boys shot 57 percent as they defeated North Putnam 83-42.

Sullivan is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the West Division of the WIC.

North Putnam did not have an answer for Sullivan center Ike Chastain, who had 18 points on 9 of 13 shooting and five rebounds.

Kevin Figg had his first double-double of his career as he collected 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

“I thought we did a good job of getting the ball inside to Ike and Kevin,” said Sullivan coach Jeff Moore. “Our size advantage was a big part of the outcome.”

Sullivan had 23 assists on 36 baskets as Ben Pirtle had a career night with 12 points and seven assists.

Sullivan, which was 36 of 63 from the field, finished with five players in double figures as Sam Steimel tallied 16 points and senior guard Ty Drake scored 14.

In the girls’ contest, sophomore forward Asia Povlin made two free throws as Sullivan’s run reached 13-0, pushing its advantage to 16-4.

Povlin tossed in 20 points and sophomore guard Reagan Holeman added 13 points and six assists for the Lady Arrows.

The North Putnam girls led 4-3 after a basket by Bailey Osborn. But the Lady Cougars struggled as they had 27 turnovers and missed 29 of 38 shots (24 percent).

Kinzey Young made 4 of 6 shots and led North Putnam with eight points.

Hannah Sims scored five points, all on free throws, Osborn had four points, Dana Tennis and Mia Runnells each scored three and Payton Lyons had two.

Lyons led North Putnam with nine rebounds while Sims contributed three steals and Tennis had two assists. Young blocked two shots.

North Putnam trailed 17-9 after the opening quarter in the boys’ game, but was outscored 66-33 over the final 24 minutes.

Cougar leading scorer Elliot Gross did not play due to an ankle injury suffered in Wednesday night’s win over Covenant Christian,

Andrew Pickel paced the Cougars with 16 points while Caleb Duncan added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Treyton Smith collected five points, three steals and three assists for North Putnam, who shot 33 percent (15 of 46).

The North Putnam girls will host Indianapolis International on Tuesday.

North Putnam will play at Northview next Friday in another girls-boys conference twin bill, starting at 6 p.m.
