Santa to visit, ride with GFD Dec. 16

Tuesday, December 12, 2017
Banner Graphic/Eric Bernsee Santa Claus arrived downtown aboard the Greencastle Fire Department’s 1928 Studebaker fire truck for a Dec. 1 visit to Greencastle. He will be back in town, back atop the truck, on Saturday for a visit to GFD.

In hopes of starting a new holiday tradition, the Greencastle Professional Firefighers Local 5125 will host Santa Claus at the Greencastle Fire Department on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 16.

Santa will arrive at GFD at 1 p.m. to embark on a ride around the city. Weather-permitting, the ride will be on GFD’s open-cab 1928 Studebaker fire truck. Otherwise, the ride will occur on one of the more modern trucks.

The parade route will be south from the firehouse on Indiana Street and east on Seminary Street, all the way to Wood Street.

From Wood Street, Santa will proceed east on Washington Street to Percy Julian Drive, then north to Shadowlawn Drive.

From westbound Shadowlawn, the fire truck will bear Santa back south on Indiana Street to the GFD station at 107 S. Indiana St.

Once back at GFD at around 2 p.m., Santa will be available for visits and photo opportunities with local children.

  • Would love to see the fire department bring back an old tradition of many years. In the 60's I stood outside in the freezing cold, several times a few blocks south of the station on Indiana St. Bundled up like Eskimos we stood a long long time waiting. But the excitement of the little ones waiting to sit on Santa's lap to receive a candy cane and a small sack with an apple or orange was very special. I still have a picture of my oldest waiting to see Santa. These memories are the greatest Greencastle! Many kudos to the fire Dept for their upcoming parade.
