Fred J. Girton, 85, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017 at Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville.

Born Feb. 15, 1932 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Eugene and Edith (Rogers) Girton.

He was a 1950 graduate of Fillmore High School.

Fred was a veteran, having honorably served on active duty in the United States Army.

Fred had retired from Bridgeport Brass Co. /Olin Corp., where he had been a machinist for 44 years.

He was a member of the Fillmore Christian Church, a life member of the VFW and Greencastle Elks Lodge 1077.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years and high school sweetheart, Joyce E. (Arnold) Girton; a sister, Middy Phillips, Rockville; sisters-in-law, Joan (Al) Veazey, Wilma Wallace and Shirley (Jack) Whitley; brother-in-law, Jimmie (Bobbie Jean) Arnold; several nieces and nephews; and a great nephew, Jason B. Girton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard E. Girton; sister-in-law, Peggy L. Girton; brother-in-law, Charles K. Phillips; and nephew, Jerry D. Girton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment with military honors will follow at Fillmore Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18 at the funeral home.
