Cubs split pair with Sullivan

Saturday, December 16, 2017

SULLIVAN — The Sullivan boys’ basketball team appeared to be cruising to its fifth straight win overall, third in a row in the West Division of the Western Indiana Conference and SHS coach Jeff Moore picking up his 400th career win, but Greencastle tried to spoil the party.

The Tigers Cubs made 5 of 11 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, cutting a 15-point deficit to one possession, but Sullivan prevailed 60-58 on Friday night.

Greencastle slipped to 3-3, 2-1 in the WIC.

“They started throwing in everything, “ said Moore, who has a 400-241 record in his 28th season, all at Sullivan. “After the game, we talked about learning from this.

“You can’t relax on teams. We took a couple of quick shots and they got hot. We were able to survive and get out of here with a win.”

In the first half of the twinbill, the Greencastle girls extended its winning streak to nine with a 52-42 win over the host Lady Arrows.

Greencastle is now 9-3, 3-0 in the WIC. Sullivan dropped to 4-7, 1-2.

The difference in the girls’ game was at the foul line. Greencastle made 17 of 23 free throws, including 6 of 6 by Allison Stevens, Jalyn Duff made 6 of 8 and Rose White was 4 of 5 as part of her game-high 16 points, and Sullivan shot 2 of 3.

Sullivan had 23 more field goal attempts that Greencastle, but made just one more. The Lady Arrows were 17 of 64 (27 percent).

Sullivan trailed 8-2 after the first quarter and 19-15 at intermission.

Lindsey Hatch came off the bench and four 3-pointers to finish with 14.

Stevens made 4 of 5 shots to go with her free throws, finishing with 14 points.

Sullivan scored the first six points and never trailed in the boys’ game, leading 20-13 after one quarter, 32-20 at the half and led 45-30 before Greencastle’s Benton Parmley knocked down a 3-pointer to end the third, cutting the lead to 45-33.

Greencastle, which made 9 of 17 shots in the fourth quarter, gradually got back into the game as Brody Whitaker and Gavin Bollman buried consecutive 3-pointers, cutting the deficit to 51-43 with five minutes remaining.

Colin York, who paced the Tiger Cubs with a game-high 23 points, and Whitaker scored on back-to-back possessions as the Sullivan lead dwindled to 51-47 at the 3:53 mark.

SHS senior Sam Steimel snapped the 7-0 run with a basket in the lane and then York drilled another 3-pointer as GHS trimmed the deficit to 53-50 on the fourth of his five baskets in the fourth quarter.

Greencastle would get no closer until York threw in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Gavin Bollman had 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Greencastle.

The Greencastle boys play tonight at Cloverdale while the ladies play at Cloverdale on Tuesday.
