DePauw men drop pair in NCAC

HIRAM, Ohio — On the tail end of a back-to-back, DePauw lost a first half lead, and Hiram won their third straight NCAC game 66-60 on Sunday.

DePauw held a 37-32 lead at the half, but was outscored 34-23 in the final 20 minutes. The Tigers led by as many as nine with 16:27 remaining but lost their lead for good at 6:26 when Isaiah Matthews hit a 3-pointer to give Hiram a 57-55 edge.

Riley Doody tied it with 4:25 to go after Jack VandeMerkt found him cutting to the basket for an easy layup. Doody then took a charge on the other end to give DePauw the opportunity to retake the lead. However, a 3-pointer failed to fall, and Hiram connected on its next possession to make it 59-57 with 3:17 remaining.

Later in the game, Josh Hall made a 3-pointer to bring DePauw within one at 61-60. After two made free throws from the Terriers, Cris Burrough received a good look from beyond the arc to tie the game with 48 seconds remaining but failed to connect. Hiram closed the game with a 3-pointer.

The freshman Hall, who received the start, finished with a career-high 15 points. Doody tied a career-high with 11 points, and David Vogel finished with nine.

DePauw dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the NCAC.

The Tigers head south for the annual Tampa Bay Shootout on Dec. 29 and will open play against Hampden-Sydney.

Allegheny, 70, DePauw 57 – DePauw traveled to Allegheny looking to end a three-game skid on Saturday, but it was Allegheny breaking their own three-game losing streak with a 70-57 victory over the Tigers.

Freshman Josh Hall was a bright spot for the Tigers, scoring 10 points off the bench with a team-high eight rebounds. David Vogel led DePauw with 12 points and finished with seven rebounds. Five other players finished with six points.

Allegheny’s leading scorers on the year in Jordan Rawls and Jamison Nee did just that for the Gators on Saturday. Rawls scored a double-double with a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds, and Nee finished with 17.

Allegheny’s 13-point win happened in part with an 11-0 run to start the game. Mason Hankins’ 3-pointer at 15:42 broke the scoring drought for the Tigers.

DePauw got to within six points with two minutes remaining in the first half, but Allegheny was able to extend its lead to 40-30 at halftime.

Jack VandeMerkt connected on an and-one to bring DePauw within four at 42-38 with 16:24 remaining in the game. After forcing a turnover on the other end, Vogel missed a 3-pointer to bring the Tigers even closer.

On the next possession, Allegheny hit a 3-pointer of their own and retook momentum. They led by double digits for the remaining 5:34.

DePauw won the battle of the boards 45-40 and outscored Allegheny’s bench 37-12. Allegheny converted nine points off of DePauw’s 17 turnovers, while DePauw scored six on Allegheny’s 11 turnovers.

The Gators shot 40 percent (23-of-58), and DePauw shot 33 percent (21-of-64).
