Clovers pick up 80-66 win over Greencastle

CLOVERDALE — All players not named Jalen Moore and Colin York battled to a 27-26 game on Saturday night in boys’ high school basketball action.

The Clovers narrowly won the battle of supporting casts, but Moore’s school record-tying 53 point output was a little superior to York’s career-high total of 40 — and Cloverdale came away with an 80-66 in.

Moore hit 19 of 32 field goals, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range, and added 12 of 13 from the line.

York hit 16 of 24 field goals, with 6 of 13 coming from long range, and hit both of his free throw attempts.

A York trey with three seconds left in the first quarter gave the Tiger Cubs the lead at the first stop at 15-12.

York hit a pair of free throws — the first of which allowed him to reach the 1,000-point scoring mark for his career and a trey to put Greencastle up 23-18.

Clover coach Patrick Rady then reached into his father’s bag of coaching tricks and sent his team into a 2-2-1 zone press, which sped up the game more to his liking and allowed the Clovers to break away.

Down 23-20, the Clovers scored 15 straight points — not surprisingly with a lot of help from Moore.

The sneaky lefty had 11 second-quarter points, giving him 20 for the first half, as the Clovers were able to turn the tables and take a 35-27 halftime lead.

Two York baskets in the final 52 seconds ended the Tiger Cub scoring drought.

“Defensively we struggled when they were able to get the ball out in transition,” Greencastle coach Bryce Rector said. “Jalen was a load to handle, and we knew that going into the game. I would have hoped we could have handled the ball a little better.”

Rector was pleased to see York have such a standout game.

“He was fantastic,” Rector said of his senior guard. “If he continues to play like that, we’re going to win a lot of games.”

A York trey early in the second half cut the lead to 35-30, before the Clovers took off again.

A Moore basket, a Jake Kelley trey, a Nick Winders trey, a Moore basket and two Moore free throws comprised another 12-0 Cloverdale run.

From that point, the Cubs were only able to get as close as nine points the rest of the way.

Moore had 13 points in the third period and 20 in the fourth quarter, combining short jumpers with layups, free throws and 3-pointers.

“The 2-2-1 was really good to us,” Rady said. “We rotated well, and we wanted to speed the game up. We know when we do that we’re going to give up some good shots, and Colin York was on fire.

“He was really, really good,” Rady added. “We did speed it up, and we had one that was really, really good. People saw two of the premier guards in the state tonight.”

While Moore dominated his team’s scoring, the other Clovers produced 27 points between them to give the senior standout the help he needed.

“He was able to spread them out a little bit, and Parker Watts and Jake Kelley both hit big threes,” Rady said. “Our other guys are coming through with scoring, and we need for that to continue. Jake Wilkes had a big second quarter [10 points on 4 of 4 shooting].”

The Clovers are now finished playing until the First Financial Classic at Terre Haute next week.

Greencastle will host Cascade tonight in its final game before the break.

Brody Whitaker added 10 points for the Cubs, while Wilkes added 13.

Whitaker was one of three freshmen on the court for the Cubs in a long stretch of the second half.

“I thought in the halfcourt we flowed offensively,” Rector said. “From now until the second week of February is a ton of time, and we have a lot of things to work on before the county tourney.”
