Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:46 p.m. on Sunday, Gwendolyn M. Ware, 28, Monrovia, was westbound on State Road 42 in a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta when she hit a deer.

Deputy Riley Houghton estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 11:27 p.m. on Saturday, Colby M. Green, 23, Brownsburg, was eastbound on County Road 125 South in a 1998 Chevrolet truck when it left the road, hit a tree and bounced backward about 15-20 feet.

The Greencastle Fire Department and Putnam County Operation Life were already on the scene upon the arrival of Deputy Robert Soilleux and green was already in the back of the ambulance.

Green told Soilleux he’d had three beers earlier in the day, around 6 p.m., but did not feel intoxicated. He said he was on his way to a friend’s house but must have gotten turned around.

Green said he looked down at his phone but did not answer it, looking back up in time to realize he was in a curve and about to hit a tree.

Soilleux observed several Coors beer bottles scattered around the crash scene, but Green said these had come from the bed of the truck and were not in the cab with him.

The deputy administered a portable breath test, which read at .134 blood alcohol content. A certified blood test was also pending at Terre Haute Union Hospital.

Green was taken to the hospital for minor head bleeding.

He was preliminarily charged with driving while intoxicated.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 3:10 p.m. on Saturday, Daniel F. Soeka, 19, Munster, was northbound on U.S. 231 approaching County Road 350 North in a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier.

A deer ran into the roadway as he entered a curve. Soeka swerved to miss the animal, but made impact with the passenger side rear door.

Soeka then lost control and left the west side of the road. It rolled several times going down a steep embankment.

Both Soeka and his passenger, 15-year-old Brett Soeka, were able to exit the vehicle before emergency services arrived. Both sustained minor cuts.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 4:50 a.m. Saturday, Putnam County Dispatch received a call regarding a traffic accident. The caller said a friend had wrecked a vehicle but the location was unknown.

About 30 minutes later, dispatch received a call that the driver, 26-year-old James J. Campbell of Greencastle, had been located and an accident report was not needed.

At 6:20 a.m. Seniour’s Towing called requesting an accident report on the same vehicle.

Meeting with Seniour’s and with Campbell, Deputy Matt Biggs discovered that the vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side. Campbell attributed the accident to a steering malfunction.

The exact location of the crash is unknown but it was reportedly in the area of County Road 250 North and County Road 500 West.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 7:43 a.m. on Thursday, Michelle M. Robbins, 29, Greencastle, was northeast-bound on County Road 275 East in a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt.

She told Capt. Tom Helmer that as she rounded a curve, a deer ran into the road. She tried to swerve left to avoid the deer but lost control.

The vehicle slid across the southbound lane and Robbins turned the steering wheel to the right in an attempt to regain control.

The car then slid to the right, causing both left tires to partially deflate as it slide backward off the roadway and into a fence.

Helmer estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.
