Toughness helps Cubs snap skid

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs boys’ basketball team came into Tuesday night’s game against the Cascade Cadets on a three-game losing streak. The Cubs toughed one out and picked up a 55-39 victory over the Cadets to even their overall record at 4-4.

Greencastle beat the Cadets to most loose balls, outrebounded the visitors 35-19, and hit more free throws than Cascade attempted. The Cubs made 14, while the Cadets only attempted nine.

“We weren’t really where we wanted to be heading into today. We had a three-game losing streak. You saw tonight, we have some physically and mentally tough kids,” Greencastle head coach Bryce Rector said.

That toughness was needed in the first quarter as neither team could get a shot to fall. The teams combined to hit just 4-of-19 from the floor and scored a total of 10 points. The Cadets led 6-4 at the end of the period.

The Cubs got a shot in the arm in the second quarter from Benton Parmley and Trey Wood off the bench. The freshman guard hit two three-pointers in the first part of the second period and paced Greencastle with six of his 12 points in the quarter.

Wood came off the bench also and picked up three rebounds and two points for the Cubs. Greencastle used a 9-2 run in the middle of the quarter to take control of the game. The Cubs led 21-13 at the intermission.

“Benton Parmley stepped up huge tonight. He hit three three-pointers, I don’t think he missed a shot. Trey Wood gave some excellent minutes tonight. When he plays well he is really, really good for us,” Rector said.

Greencastle dominated the third quarter as Colin York got untracked. The senior guard, who was honored prior to the game for surpassing 1,000 career points, scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter. Greencastle pounded the boards in the quarter, outrebounding the Cadets 8-4 and extending their lead to 36-23 heading into the final stanza.

“I think we only gave up one offensive rebound. That has been a struggle and we made sure in practice, they (team) understood that. It’s great to see what we work on in practice carry over to the game,” Rector said.

Parmley started the fourth quarter hitting his third trey of the game and the Cubs extended their lead to 41-23 before the Cadets began to get going offensively. Greencastle kept Cascade at bay, by hitting their free throws. The Cubs hit 10-of-14 from the charity stripe in the period. The Cadets did manage to cut the lead back to 13 points, but then the Greencastle defense went back to work. The Cubs still outscored Cascade 19-16 in the final period to set the final margin at 55-39. Greencastle held the Cadets to 39 percent (16-of-41) shooting on the night and held Cascade’s leading scorer, Dalton DuBois, to 15 points and he only had six entering the final period.

“He’s (DuBois) an excellent player. We did a really nice job defensively tonight. At Cloverdale, I was disappointed in how we closed out and contested shots. I thought we did a much better job tonight. We had a sense of urgency that we had not had,” Rector said.

Dubois was the only Cadet in double figures with 15 points. Colin York led the Cubs with 19 points. Parmley had 12 points and Gavin Bollman added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Greencastle’s basketball team is now off until after the holidays. The Tiger Cubs are back in action on Jan. 5 against Western Indiana Conference foe,Northview.
