DePauw teams busy over holidays

DePauw’s basketball teams played in two-day tournaments last weekend, with the women hosting and winning the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic and the Tiger men’s team finished second in the Tampa Bay Shootout after winning the last eight titles.

Women

Tigers sweep tourney — DePauw closed the first half with an 18-4 run and ended the third with a 13-2 stretch and rolled to an 80-49 win over visiting John Carroll in the final game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic.

The Tigers, ranked 12th in the latest coaches’ poll and 13th by D3hoops.com, improved to 12-1 with their eighth straight win.

The teams were locked up in a tight battle throughout the first period that included two ties and three lead changes with DePauw pulling ahead for a 15-13 edge after the opening 10 minutes. John Carroll scored the first three of the second to take a 16-15 lead, but the Tigers scored six straight to start an 18-4 run that propelled them to a 33-20 halftime lead. DePauw held the Blue Streaks scoreless over the final four minutes and didn’t commit a turnover in the second period after totaling six in the first.

Howard, the Classic Most Valuable Player, led all scorers with 20, while Claire Keefe followed with 14 and all-tournament selection Emily Budde 12. Abby Adler paced John Carroll with 13.

In the tourney opener, DePauw missed its first nine shots from the floor and fell behind to visiting Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 7-0 before rallying to win 58-46.

Despite the slow start, DePauw trailed just 13-12 at the quarter break after closing the stanza on an 8-3 run. The teams exchanged buckets early in the second before DePauw embarked on a 10-0 run that started with a Kylie Morris layup followed by 3-pointers from Sydney Kopp and Maya Howard and wrapped up with two free throws from Imani Graham. The Tigers took a 24-18 lead into the intermission.

Men

Tourney streak ends — Heidelberg denied DePauw its ninth consecutive Tampa Bay Shootout championship with a 69-65 victory on Saturday.

DePauw had an opportunity to tie it late but David Vogel missed a jumper with less than 10 seconds remaining. Myron Prewitt, who led Heidelberg with 15 points, made two free throws to close the game.

Jack VandeMerkt scored 16 points to lead DePauw off the bench. Cris Burrough and Vogel each scored 10, while Vogel grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Prince Benson and James Hanley each scored 13 for the Student Princes.

On Friday, DePauw ended a five-game skid and picked up a win in the first round with a 70-64 victory over Hampden-Sydney.

Freshman Josh Hall led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. He also led the game and tied a career-high with eight rebounds.

Jack VandeMerkt totaled 13 of DePauw’s 21 bench points and collected six rebounds. David Vogel added 13 points.

The teams were tied 34-34 at halftime, and DePauw started the final 20 minutes with a 13-4 run. They led by as many as 11 with 11:39 to go at 56-45.

Hampden-Sydney brought themselves within two with five minutes remaining, and a 3-pointer made it 65-64 at 2:07. DePauw scored the final five points.
