Charles Luther Reed, 63, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 with his family by his side.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1954, in Danville, Ill., the son of Rex and Lillian (Scott) Reed.

He graduated from Clay City High School with the class of 1972. He served his country in the United States Army.

As a civilian he worked for Putnamville Correctional Facility as a counselor. He retired in 2014 after 32 years of service.

He was a member of the Hanna Street Baptist Church in Greencastle, the Cloverdale Masonic Lodge where he had been awarded the 33rd Degree, and Scottish Rite of Terre Haute.

Chuck enjoyed camping with his family. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He also coached basketball and softball for his kids and grandkids.

He and Marylyn enjoyed going “gallivanting” around the countryside, enjoying the scenery and, of course, good food.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Marylyn Reed of Greencastle; stepchildren Todd Detro and wife Nealy of Greencastle, Jill Poynter and husband Jeff of Zionsville and Mandy Hofer (Jim Franklin) of Greencastle; grandchildren Olivia Detro, Katie Detro, Shayna Poynter, Brett Poynter, Chase Poynter, Erika Poynter and Makenna Hofer; two sisters, Judy Dowell of Terre Haute and Jenny Amey of Terre Haute; a brother, Danny Reed of Oregon; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Lillian Reed, and his brother, Scotty Reed.

Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. Eighth St., Clay City, on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Pat Smith officiating.

Masonic services will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors provided.
