With a record number of people taking advantage of the free cab service offered for the New Year’s Eve holiday, few impaired drivers were found on the roads of Putnam County.

Unfortunately, there was one DUI arrest reported at the Putnam County Jail during the overnight hours of Sunday into Monday.

“Regrettably, it seems one individual failed to use good judgment and take advantage of the free A Cab Service last night,” Sheriff Scott Stockton said Monday.

The Truck Service Center at the Cloverdale Truck Stop was heavily damaged Saturday when a semi slid through the front wall.

Dave Evans of A-Cab told the sheriff his taxi service that his company took more than 140 calls for free service during the holiday, up from 85 last year.

“He too was disappointed with the arrest, as so many went to great lengths to ensure a DUI arrest was avoidable,” Stockton said.

Those going to great lengths included Felling and Felling Attorneys, Eagles Aerie 4388 and A Cab, who came together to sponsor the cab rides this year.

“Fortunately there were no accidents involved with these arrests,” Stockton said. “Apparently people in the community are being responsible with alcohol consumption.”

What was more common during the long weekend were weather-related events, with snowfall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday making for some treacherous road conditions.

On Saturday morning, a truck failed to stop at the Cloverdale Truck Stop, instead sliding into the front of the Truck Service Center, heavily damaging the block wall and overhead door.

Saturday afternoon also featured a crash on Interstate 70, albeit on roads that were clear of snow at the time.

Senior Troopers Johnny Myers and Ted Robertson reported that at 12:56 p.m. 24-year-old Charles Bright of St. Charles, Mo., was westbound when he veered his semi to the right, striking a flatbed recovery vehicle on the shoulder.

The recovery vehicle was being driven by 47-year-old Fitsum Segid of Indianapolis.

Bright told the troopers his attention was diverted from the road.

The right lane was temporarily closed due to the incident. In addition to ISP, Putnam County Operation Life, Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department, Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department and Curtis Wrecker all responded to the scene.
