The year 2018 marks the 50th year of Putnam County Comprehensive Services (PCCS) providing home and community based services to Hoosiers with disabilities.

PCCS was founded as a not-for-profit business on Aug. 2, 1968 by a group of parents and local citizens concerned with the need for quality programs close to home for their loved ones. Long-term institutional care, often hours from the family home, was beginning to be replaced by the desire to keep families unified. PCCS was formed to help -- and still helps today -- to fill that demand.

Over the years PCCS has grown to not only provide day services for educational and vocational opportunities for the people they serve in Putnam County, but now provides services to more than 400 individuals and their families in 26 Indiana counties.

PCCS’s broad scope of services now includes 24-hour care, community access and integration, job training and placement, micro-enterprise, transportation and arts programs. Not only does PCCS maintain an active presence in Greencastle, but there is also a full-service day program and administrative office in Greenwood to assist with the demand for services in that area.

PCCS began its 50th year with the award of a three-year accreditation, the highest possible award, from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The CARF survey process entails an exhaustive review of more than 1,500 standards of care for the individuals, families and communities for which PCCS provides services. PCCS had only seven recommendations for improvement, all paperwork related, as a result of this survey process.

PCCS was commended by the CARF survey team for a “tenured, dedicated staff who are focused on providing high-quality services to the consumers.” The surveyors also noted, ”Staff extend themselves beyond assigned duties to get the job done. The consumers feel safe and loved. Noteworthy are the stories of how consumers believed PCCS has saved them from challenging life experiences.”

As 2018 rolls on, PCCS will be celebrating its anniversary all year long with a schedule of events each month that will focus on celebrating the staff and consumers that will make PCCS a special place for 50 more years to come.

“PCCS is a special place that Putnam County, and all of Indiana, can be proud of,” Executive Director Andrew Ranck remarked. “The dedication of the staff, the determination of the people we serve, and the support we receive from the community serves as an example of true stewardship and inspiration.

“I was so fortunate to have been handed the reins of this constantly growing and evolving enterprise,” Ranck added, “and I sincerely hope the next 50 years are just as special and meaningful to the people we serve, the people we employ, and the communities we share with all Hoosiers.”
