Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 11:36 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Alex M. Hitchcock, 18, Quincy, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria. He told Deputy Robert Soilleux the rear end let loose, causing the car to fishtail and run off the south side of the road.

The car then whipped around and slid sideways across both lane of traffic and off the north side of the road.

At first, Hitchcock said he was not injured but then started complaining of severe abdominal pain.

He was taken to Putnam County Hospital for treatment.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Jeremiah I. Fruits, 27, Crawfordsville, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2001 Ford F150.

Fruits told Deputy Soilleux he hit a patch of black ice and lost control. This caused the pickup to fishtail and slide sideways off the west side of the road, where the truck hit a culvert and rolled onto its side.

A witness told Soilleux he was following Fruits, who was driving 20-25 mph slower than the speed limit when he lost control.

Fruits said he was not injured and refused medical treatment.

Due to icy conditions, Fruits chose to delay vehicle recovery until the following day.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.
