The web of criminal activity surrounding an April 2017 home invasion in Madison Township continues to widen.

On Tuesday, a fifth person was charged with crimes related to the invasion and robbery at the home of Terry and Patsy McCarter.

Although not alleged to have directly taken part in the robbery, 23-year-old Ashley Hillenburg of Indianapolis was charged with two counts of Level 5 felony corrupt business influence as well as Class A misdemeanor theft.

Four men are accused of perpetrating the original crime— 29-year-old Paul Reese Jr., 31-year-old Charles Maybaum, 29-year-old Justin Cherry and 20-year-old Daltyn Randolph.

They are alleged to have entered the McCarter home and held the couple at gunpoint as they ransacked the residence.

During the incident, Terry McCarter was struck in the temple area with the butt of either a rifle or shotgun.

Among the items stolen were prescriptions, checks, jewelry, a rifle, a handgun, a purse, wallet and cash.

The McCarters also witnessed their Buick Redezvous being driven away.

The four men all face various charges of burglary, armed robbery, criminal confinement and theft.

Hillenburg is alleged to have taken part after the fact, in that some of the items stolen from the residence were later recovered from an Indianapolis storage unit that she and Reese shared.

According to court documents, Hillenburg and Reese had a child together and were dating at the time of the incident.

She told Owen County Det. Erich Teuton that she had rented the storage unit in January 2017 and had not been there since. However, later in the interview she admitted to having been there at least twice in May.

During one visit, she and Reese went there in separate vehicles. At that time, she observed him unloading several things including “rolled up coins, collector-type coins, a dark-colored duffel bag and something that looked like a safe.”

Hillenburg went on to tell Teuton that Paul did not say where he got the items but she assumed they were stolen.

Owen County’s involvement in the case springs from a May 2 incident similar to the Madison Township home invasion. In that investigation, Reese, Maybaum, Hillenburg and Emily Nicole Redmon all being charged with various crimes.

Hillenburg’s Owen County charges include Level 5 felony corrupt business influence and Class A misdemeanor theft.

Hillenburg was booked in the Putnam County Jail at 3:46 a.m. on Thursday.
