Norman E. 'Jake' Jernagan

Norman E. "Jake" Jernagan, 78, Williamsport, passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at 8:45 p.m. at Williamsport Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Antioch, Ill., on Aug. 25, 1939, the son of Warren and Helen (Armstrong) Jernagan.

Jake was a 1958 graduate of Williamsport High School.

He married Martha Jane VanHook on Sept. 27, 1969. She preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 2011.

Jake worked for Harrison Steel Casting Co. and Sewell Gas Station before serving in the U.S. Army. When he returned he worked as a mechanic for the Warren County Highway Dept. and Quaker Oats in Danville, Ill., before retiring in 2004.

Jake was a member of the Williamsport Christian Church, Warren County Rescue, American Legion Post 259, and the Williamsport Volunteer Fire Department where he served as assistant chief for 33 years. He also loved to tinker on things in his spare time.

Jake is survived by his sons, Sean Jernagan (fiancé Denise Hogue) of West Lafayette, and Jared Jernagan (wife Nicole) of Greencastle; five grandchildren, Jacob, Kayce and Ella Jernagan of Williamsport and Miles and Hannah Jernagan of Greencastle; mother-in-law Martha VanHook of West Lebanon; and siblings, Maxine Johnson of Conway, Ark., Mary Shoaf (husband Bill) of Williamsport, Linda Gregory (husband Eugene) of Williamsport, and Charlene Davis of Williamsport.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two infant brothers, and a sister, Jeannine Shoaf.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 5-8 p.m. at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport.

Services will be there in the chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Cathy McCoy officiating.

Interment will be at Highland Cemetery in Williamsport with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Williamsport Volunteer Fire Department.
