Library, Arts Council slate Art of the Word and Book

The Art of the Word and Book, a hands-on series of classes for adults sponsored by the Greencastle Arts Council in cooperation with the Putnam County Public Library, will be conducted at the library on Tuesday evenings, April through September.

Talented local artists and writers will teach classes on various forms of writing and creative media. All classes will focus on art forms that can be bound into a book.

The series launches on Tuesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. with a talk on Book Arts by Alexandra Chamberlain, assistant curator of exhibitions and education at DePauw University. The talk will feature artists’ books from the DePauw Permanent Art Collection, and from local artists Theresa McGuire and Barbara Fields Timm. Timm will also present a powerpoint on book arts and an overview of the Art of the Word and Book series.

All participants are encouraged to take advantage of free open studio sessions in September for further development of projects they started in class. Work from any class can be bound into a book at the end of the series either during the bookbinding class or independently.

The series will culminate in a November exhibition of books and other projects created during the series.

Enrollment began Monday, April 9. To enroll, persons may visit the library circulation desk and fill out a registration form.

Class sizes are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a small fee, noted below, to cover materials for some of the classes.

Payment (cash or check) is required at the time of enrollment. Students can enroll in one or more classes.

Tuesday, May 22 and Sept. 11 (two sessions), 6-8 p.m. -- Writing Personal Narratives by Steve Timm (no fee).

Tuesday, May 29, 6-8 p.m. -- Fundamentals of Papermaking by Lavinia Hale ($10).

Tuesday, June 5, 6-8 p.m. -- Photo Transfer/Mounting by Martha Wharton ($10).

Tuesday, June 12, 6-8 p.m. -- Calligraphy: The Art of the Pen by Jessie Scott and Ruth Scott ($10).

Tuesday, June 26 and July 10 (two sessions), 5-7 p.m. -- Watercolor Painting by Barbara Bates ($10).

Tuesday, July 24, 6-8 p.m. -- Monotype Printing by Jessica Saunders ($10).

Tuesday, July 31 and Aug. 28 (two sessions), 6-8 p.m. -- Haiku by Bob Sorrells (no fee).

Tuesday, Aug. 7, 6-8 p.m. -- Book Binding by Theresa McGuire ($10).

Tuesday, Aug. 14, 6-8 p.m. -- Cross Stitch by Tammy Hunter, Ann Provine, Conni Wrightsman ($10).
