PREP ROUNDUP: Cougars bounce back to pick up wins

After suffering big defeats earlier in the week, North Putnam picked up good wins on Friday in both baseball and softball action.

In baseball, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth against Turkey Run and held on for a 4-3 victory.

Hayden Rudes went the distance on the mound for the Cougars, allowing just three hits and one earned run. He struck out six batters and walked five.

Cole Shoemaker drove in two runs for the Cougars and scored a run, while Colton Clifford had two singles, Kaine Benge had a double and a run scored and Kolten Thorson and Rudes each had a single and a run scored. Jalen Berry added an RBI.

Rudes manufactured a run in the third inning by reaching on a walk, advancing to third on a single by Thorson and scoring on an error.

Thorson led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, and Benge followed with another double. All three Cougar runs scored via Turkey Run errors.

On the softball field, the Cougars traveled to Crawfordsville and picked up a 7-3 victory.

Olivia Haste had a three-run double in the top of the seventh inning to help the Cougars finish off the victory.

Chloe LaPierre was dominant non the mound for the Cougars, striking out eight batters and allowing just seven hits.

Baylee Osburn had two hits, a run and an RBI to pace the Cougars at the plate, while Mia Runnells had a single, RBI and run scored, Jada Stump scored two runs, LaPierre scored one run, Kaleigh Storm had a double and a run scored and Clarissa Gibson had two RBI and a run scored.

• No. 8 Danville 8, Greencastle 4 — At Danville, the Warriors trailed 3-0 after three innings and 4-1 after four innings, but came through with six in the bottom of the fifth to escape with the win on Friday.

Ivy Wright had two singles, an RBI and a run scored for the Tiger Cubs, while Layna Robinson had a single, run and RBI and Anna Chavez and Delaney Wright each had a single and an RBI.

• Riverton Parke 13, South Putnam 7 — At Mecca, the Panthers scored 12 runs over the first three innings and held on for the victory.

Drew Bratcher had four hits, including a home run, with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Eagles at the plate. Bree Mahoney-Sutherland had two singles and two RBI for South Putnam, while Grace Carr hit two doubles with one run and one RBI.

Chloe Custis added a single and two RBI, while Helen Eaglin had a single and a run scored.

• Cloverdale 13, North Putnam 0 — At Cloverdale, the Clovers got five runs in the first inning and rode the strong pitching of Macie Couch to the victory on Thursday evening.

Couch allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out nine batters.

Kiley Shedron, Sky Lowe and Tori Combs each had two singles, two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Clovers at the plate.

Couch, Makenzie Allen and Morgan Goss each scored two runs.

Jada Stump and Dana Tennis had the two singles for the Cougars.

Track and field

• Patriots win quadrangular meets — At Spencer, Owen Valley hosted Cloverdale, South Putnam and Lighthouse Christian Academy for quadrangular meets on Thursday.

Owen Valley won the boys’ meet with 90.5 points, while Cloverdale was second with 63, South Putnam was third with 54.5 and LCA was fourth with 24.

In the girls’ meet, the hosts had 111 points, while Cloverdale had 62, South Putnam had 57 and LCA had 0.

“We had some bright spots in the meet,” Clover coach Andy Tyler said. “Tyler Kaeff hit his best times for this season, and Madison Shoemaker also hit a personal best in the discus. Our 800 runners are getting fasting as well.”

Kaeff won the 300 hurdles for the Clovers and was second in the 100 hurdles, while Blake Willis won the pole vault.

For South Putnam, Austin Rumley won the 800, Michael Crossman won the 400 and Karl Egold won the 1,600.

In the girls’ meet, Lillie Stein won the 400 for South Putnam, while Ally Nichols won the 800 and the 1,600, Grace Burdge won the 3,200. Shoemaker won the discus for Cloverdale and Kenzie Stoltz won the 100 hurdles.
