ZIONSVILLE — Greencastle junior Emma Wilson continued her destruction of meet records by establishing two new standards on Friday at the Zionsville Invitational.

Wilson set personal bests in winning both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Wilson’s time of 4:55.30 in the 1,600 and her time of 10:37.85 in the 3,200 both set records for the event.

Greencastle’s Sydney Kallem finished 17th in the women’s 1,600 meters in 5:48.00.

Tiger Cub senior Ben Gellman finished 18th in the men’s 3,200 in a time of 10:32.54, also setting a personal record, while South Putnam junior Austin Rumley finished 10th in the men’s 800 meters in a PR time of 2:00.42.

Golf

• __Cubs win own invitational — Greencastle hosted and won the Tiger Cub Invitational on Saturday at Windy Hill, shooting a 336 to beat runnerup Northview by 11 strokes.

Indian Creek was third with 393 strokes, while Southmont was fourth with 400, South Vermillion was fifth with 4-2, and North Putnam was sixth with 536.

Greencastle’s Jake Bennett shot a 74, while Jaxon Parmley of the Cubs was third with an 82. Conner Taylor added an 86 and Kyle Tesmer shot a 94.

“The Tiger Cubs won their own invitational on a cool, windy, sunny Saturday,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “The course played very difficult with fast, hard greens and a strong northwest wind.

“Jake had an outstanding round of 74 that could have been three strokes better, but bogeyed the last three holes,” Paquin added. “His play was strong in all areas on a hard and difficult course.”

Paquin also commended Parmley for an outstanding round.

“Jaxon played well to tie for third individually,” he said. “He managed his play well even though he didn’t have his best ball-striking day. Conner had a few driving problems, but still managed to score pretty well. Kyle’s day was two consistent nines with just a few scoring problems.”

The Cubs were again playing without senior Blaise Hasty and freshman Benton Parmley due to illness/injury.

“This was a good win considering we had to count our four lineup scores,” Paquin said. “This was the third invitational victory of the season for the Cubs, with the Mustang Invitational being canceled two weeks ago. Also, this was the third different lineup in the three invitationals, which show the depth of the Cubs players.”

The Cubs will play at Twin Bridges against host North Putnam and sectional opponent Crawfordsville on Wednesday.

Both matches start at 4:30.

In other golf:

Greencastle 177, Danville 195 — Jake Bennett shot a 41 to win medalist honors as the Tiger Cubs beat the Warriors.

Conner Taylor added a 44, while Jaxon Parmley and Kyle Tesmer each had a 46, Benton Parmley had a 52 and Josh Bomgardner had a 55.

GHS coach Steve Paquin was happy to see his team play well on a difficult course.

“This was an eye opener for the players as this was the first real test on a golf course that had all the elements of a difficult course — length, large greens, fairway and greenside bunkers, water, left and right doglegs, mounds, trees, lateral hazards and out of bounds.”

Paquin noted those obstacles will challenge the best of players and will show each player how they stack up on the difficult courses they will have to play in upcoming tournaments.

“I think our players learned tonight what it is going to take to score on difficult courses,” he said. “I saw lots of good shots tonight, but also shots that resulted in double and triple bogeys. Jake, Conner, Jaxon, and Kyle were consistent in keeping their scores close to each other.

“Benton and Josh had too many doubles and triples [bogeys] to keep their scores in the 40s.”

The Cubs again played without their No. 3 player (Blaise Hasty), who will be back Wednesday.

“One plus for the players is they will be back at Twin Bridges on against North Putnam and Crawfordsville, maybe to get a little revenge for Monday’s round,” Paquin said.

Clovers finish second, Eagles third — Tri-West shot a 165 on Monday evening to win a triangular match.

Cloverdale finished second with 200, while South Putnam was third with 208.

Tri-West’s Taylor Gardner was the medalist with a 36, while Cloverdale’s Drew Boyette was second overall with a 41.

Wyatt Helterbrand added a 47 for Cloverdale, while Jason Miller shot a 55, Tyler Harrison had a 57, Michael Holsapple shot a 58 and Cody Morris carded a 62.

Tyler Hicks led South Putnam with a 49, while Justin Pitts had a 52, Moritz Scholl shot a 53, Lee Haywood added a 54, Marcus Robinson shot a 55 and Ryan Neumann added a 57.

“Drew played very well,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “He had one hole with a problem, but otherwise had a very solid round. Wyatt had one of his more consistent outings of the spring. He is just a little bit away from posting the scores that we know he is capable of.”

Wokoun noted that some of his other players are still seeking consistency.

“Jason’s round was typical of his spring, not bad but with a few glitches along the way,” he said. “He has lipped more putts already this spring than any player I have ever had. If a few of those would fall, he would be right where we need him.

“Tyler played well in spots, but is really battling issues with consistency,” Wokoun added. “He and Michael are both struggling at times, and finding a way around that is proving difficult.”

Cloverdale (5-4) plays at Sullivan Thursday with Owen Valley, White River Valley and the Golden Arrows.
