COUNTY TRACK: Tiger Cub girls, South boys repeat titles
O’Neal, Rumley win four events
Greencastle’s girls and South Putnam’s boys repeated their 2017 track and field county championships on Tuesday night at South Putnam, while North Putnam’s Ashley O’Neal and South Putnam’s Austin Rumley were two of the brightest individual stars.
The Tiger Cub girls scored 101 team points to defeat runnerup North Putnam by 29 points.
Emma Wilson was a triple winner for the Cubs, taking firsts in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Jada Amis was a double winner for the Cubs, taking firsts in the discus and shot put.
Other winners for Greencastle were Kennedy Trigg in the 400, Kiearra Hayes in the 200 and Sydney Lewis in the pole vault.
North Putnam’s Ashley O’Neal won all four events in which she participated, taking individual firsts in the 100, long jump and high jump and also running the anchor leg of the winning 4x100 relay team.
The other individual winners were North Putnam's Hannah Sims in the 300 hurdles and Cloverdale’s Kenzie Stoltz in the 100 hurdles.
Ironically, Greencastle was the only team not to win a relay.
Running with O’Neal on the 4x100 team were Hannah Sims, Reagan Christy and Emily O’Neal.
South Putnam’s team of Alex Fanning, Ally Nichols, Lexi Vanihel and Grace Burdge won the 4,800 relay, while Cloverdale’s team of Jasmine Blankenship, Grace Leonard, Chelsie Edwards and Kamrie Monnett won the 4x400 relay.
Rumley was also a four-time winner in the boys’ event, but wasn’t a part of the meet-clinching final event to show the team’s depth.
North Putnam led the team standings by two points entering the 4x400 relay, but the South Putnam team of Eric Hinkle, Karl Egold, T.J. Wilson and Tyler Scroggin was able to pick up a six-secondwin over Cloverdale to move into the top. The Cougars were third in the relay.
Rumley won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 individually, and also ran on the winnning 4x800 relay team (along with Karl Egold, Xavier Langley and Dru Bottorff) as the Eagles swept all three relay events.
The Eagles on the winning 4x100 team were Trey Blaydes, Gabe Langley, Scroggin and Jared Seidler.
Cloverdale’s Tyler Kaeff was a triple winner, recording firsts in the high jump and both hurdles races, as was North Putnam’s Scott Proctor — who won the 100, 200 and long jump.
North Putnam freshman Colton Clifford won the 400, while teammate Peyton Patterson took first in the discus.
Other winners of individual were Cloverdale’s Blake Willis in the pole vault and Greencastle’s Trever Wood in the shot put.
Cloverdale was third in the team standings while Greencastle was fourth
The track and field championship series will continue next week, with the girls’ Western Indiana Conference meet at Edgewood on Tuesday and the boys’ WIC meet at South Putnam on Thursday.
The following week, the girls’ sectional will be contested at Terre Haute North on May 15 and the boys’ sectional will be run two days later.
