Ceremony at Ivy Tech to honor two students this Wednesday

Residents are invited to join Ivy Tech Community College -- Greencastle in congratulating two Ivy Tech -- Greencastle students for being selected to represent college women from the area at a national women’s conference.

A ceremony is slated for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the Greencastle campus. Student representatives will be recognized and given send-off gifts at this small ceremony, open to the media.

Ivy Tech Community College AAUW student Affiliate, in Greencastle, will be sending two students to American Association of University Women, AAUW, National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) from May 30-June 2 at the University of Maryland.

Natasha Rivera and Diamond Burns will be representing Ivy Tech Community College’s Central Indiana service area. Rivera and Burns currently are pursuing their Associate’s degrees and see pay equity and addressing women’s issues as a passion in their lives.

Ivy Tech Community College of Central Indiana recently became a college affiliate and supports the efforts of its students through organizations like AAUW. Professor Ann O’Connor, Jennifer Bush and Amy Smith serve as faculty advisers as the campus affiliate in Greencastle continues to grow.

NCCWSL was born in 1983, when representatives from national gender equity organizations saw the need for a leadership space dedicated to empowering collegiate women.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women. Since its founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic and political.
