Northview wrapped up the West Division softball title in the Western Indiana Conference on Tuesday with a convincing 18-6 win at South Putnam.

The Knights finished league play 5-0, and will travel to Brown County on Tuesday to meet the Braves for the conference championship.

South Putnam finished third in the West Division, and will play at Indian Creek in the fifth-place game.

Eagle coach Jamie Steffy lamented his team’s defensive lapses, which led to several unearned runs and continued a disturbing trend.

“Northview is a very good team and they hit the ball really well,” he said. “But we made way too errors. If we field the ball and make some plays, it’s a different game.

“This year when we have made three errors or less, we are 8-0; we are 1-8 when we commit more than three errors,” Steffy added. “It’s a crazy thing with this group.”

South Putnam entered Tuesday’s game with a slight chance of winning the divisional crown, but Northview’s big bats put those hopes to rest with 11 runs over the first three innings — including a seven-run third inning.

Drew Bratcher hit her seventh home of the season in the bottom of the third inning, tying the single-season school record set by Jenna Jones in 2013 and tied by Mackenzie Trisler in 2014.

Northview led 11-1 going into the bottom of the fifth and was on the verge of winning via the 10-run rule, before South Putnam came back with four runs to extend the game a little longer.

Freshman Brionna Egold — one of five ninth-graders in the South Putnam starting lineup — had an RBI single, Drew Steffy added a two-run single and Bree Mahoney-Sutherland an RBI double in the rally.

“We didn’t give up,” Steffy said. “I was proud of the comeback we made. I like the progress we are making.

“We put ourselves in the position to win the conference, but we couldn’t get it done,” he said. “Nine of the 14 girls we dress are freshmen, and we have made a really good adjustment to high school ball from travel ball. We have some big goals at the end, and this loss doesn’t take away from what we can accomplish.”

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the sixth after Northview piled on six more runs in the top of the inning. Alex Steffy reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on another fielder’s choice.

South Putnam, ranked No. 9 in this week’s Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll, is now 9-8 and hosts Rockville on Thursday.

Golf

Terre Haute South 159, Greencastle 166 — At Terre Haute, the Cubs suffered their first loss of the season.

Blaise Hasty led Greencastle with a 40, while Jake Bennett had a 41, Conner Taylor had a 42, Benton Parmley had a 43, Jaxon Parmley had a 44, Kyle Tesmer

had a 47 and Josh Bomgardner had a 59.

“The [Rea Park] course played very difficult with very fast and hard greens that made scoring difficult,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Putting and chipping caused problems for all the players in keeping the ball on the green so as not to three putt.

“Jake had an off day in all phases — driving, hitting greens in regulation and putting,” Paquin added “This was his worst scoring round of the year.”

Hasty has returned to the lineup following an illness.

“Blaise played very well with only a couple of bad holes,” Paquin said. “Benton had his best round of the year, but all the other Cubs had problems on certain holes. Some nights you play well and some the course wins — and this was one of those nights. We will regroup and get ready for county and conference.”

In other golf:

Clay City 173, Cloverdale 193 — Cloverdale’s Drew Boyette was the medalist with a 39, but the Clovers fell to the Eels.

Jason Miller shot a 50 for Cloverdale, while Michael Holsapple had a 51, Tyler Harrison had a 53, Wyatt Helterbrand had a 55 and Cody Morris had a 65.

“Drew played a very good round,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “He had one glitch, but otherwise was almost flawless. After his round in the Brownsburg Invitational Saturday [80], I think he is hitting his stride at just the right time.

“Jason is slowly starting to put things in place, but is still struggling to extend his play to a full round,” Wokoun added. “He just needs to be persistent in his effort. Michael is making strides forward, but he continues to have new situations that he has to negotiate. Tyler has started to show a little more of what we expected, but he is still struggling with confidence. Wyatt had an up-and-down day. Consistency is also a key for his co tinued improvement.”

Cloverdale (5-5) plays in the Putnam County Tournament on Thursday at Clover Meadows.
