ELLETTSVILLE — With nationally-ranked Emma Wilson winning three events as expected, Greencastle’s girls’ track and field team had a leg up on the competition on Tuesday evening in the Western Indiana Conference meet.

Yet, to win such a meet requires more balance and contributions throughout the remainder of the events — and the Tiger Cubs got exactly that in defending their WIC championship.

“We had incredible performances from our entire team,” Greencastle coach Craig Jordan said. “They exceeded our expectations, which was necessary as we knew going in that it would be difficult to win this year.

Seelye Stoffregen had a lifetime best in the 100 hurdles by a tenth of a second “which was huge,” Jordan said.

Jordan was also pleased with the contributions of several new additions to his team this year, both freshmen and upperclassmen.

“They went out as if they were seasoned and many placed in the top five of their events,” he said, noting the efforts of Kiearra Hayes, Rose White, Kennedy Trigg and Claire Gillen.

“Allison Stevens ran for us last year and this year decided to focus on the throws,” Jordan noted. “She stepped up big time in the discus to place third.”

Wilson was “tough as nails,” Jordan said, and managed to defend her titles in the 1,600 (broke her meet record), 800 and 3,200 (broke her meet record). She also ran a leg on Greencastle’s third-place 4x400 relay team.

“Keeghan McLain was another huge performer for us as she tied for fifth in the high jump, which was an event she fell short of scoring in last year,” Jordan said. “Our girls gained a lot of confidence in their ability to handle multiple events and we’re excited for sectionals next week.”

Other winners from Putnam County were North Putnam’s Emily Gasho in the discus and Ashley O’Neal in the long jump, while Greencastle’s 4x100 relay team consisting of Stoffregen, Trigg, Sydney Lewis and Hayes also took first place.

Recording second-place finishes were North Putnam’s Ashley O’Neal in the high jump, Cloverdale’s Kenzie Stoltz in the 100 hurdles and Greencastle’s Jada Amis in the shot put and Lewis in the pole vault.

North Putnam’s Hannah Sims was third in the 300 hurdles, while other third-place finishers besides Greencastle’s Stevens were South Putnam’s Ally Nichols in the 1,600 and the 3,200, Cloverdale’s Chelsie Edwards in the 800 and Stoltz in the long jump.

Greencastle won the team title with 112.5 points, while Edgewood was second with 97.5.
