Greencastle gets 12-2 baseball victory over Dugger Union

DUGGER — Greencastle got back on the winning track in high school baseball on Thursday, picking up a 12-2 win at Dugger Union.

The hosts led 2-1 after four innings, but Greencastle pushed across four runs in the fifth and seven more in the top of the sixth inning to record the win.

Ethan Maier had an RBI single in the first inning for the Tiger Cubs.

Noah Alexander led off the fifth with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error. Jacob Harris followed with a single and later scored on another Maier single.

Four straight walks aided the Cubs in their sixth-inning outburst, Nick Sutherlin had an RBI single, and Gus Manion drove home two runs with a double. Maier had another RBI single and Abe Wade had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Maier finished with three singles and four RBI as the only Cub with more than one hit. Barger, Manion and Alex Costin each hit a double, while Manion and Sutherlin each had two RBI.

Harris, Brody Whitaker, Sutherlin, Manion and Barger each scored two runs.

• Rockville 6, South Putnam 5 — At Rockville, the Rox defeated the Eagles on Thursday. No other information was available.

• Riverton Parke 21, North Putnam 5 — At Mecca, the Panthers got nine runs in the first inning and 11 more in the third to help defeat the Cougars.

Kaine Benge hit a solo home run for North Putnam in the top of the first inning, and scored another run in the fourth inning as part of a double steal.

The Cougars got three more runs in the fifth. Wesley Jacobs singled and eventually came home on an error. Hayden Rudes reached on an error and Evan Davies followed with a single, with both runners coming home on a Benge double.

Benge had three of North Putnam’s six hits and drove in three runs, while also scoring twice.

• Clay City 7, Cloverdale 5 — At Clay City, the Eels got five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 tie and held on for the win.

Leading Cloverdale hitters were Nick Winders with a single, triple and home run. Parker Watts also had a single and home run, while T. J. Hagymasi, Tyce Jackson, Nick Smith, Jack Havenor and Cory Bennett all had hits.

Softball

• No. 9 South Putnam 8, Rockville 3 — The Eagles trailed 3-2 after four innings but got four in the fifth and two more in the sixth to improve to 10-8.

Drew Bratcher hit a triple, drove in four runs and scored three times to pace the Eagles at the plate. Drew Steffy had a double and two singles with one RBI, while Helen Eaglin had two singles and scored two runs. Grace Carr added a double and two RBI.

Eagle coach Jamie Steffy was especially proud of his junior varsity team, which won 12-9 for its first victory of the season.

“This is the first JV team we have had since 2005,” Steffy said. “They were really excited to get their first win.”

• Riverton Parke 6, North Putnam 3 — At Mecca, the hosts took a 3-0 lead after three innings and held on for the win.

Mia Runnells scored the first run for the Cougars in the third inning as she was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an error. Jada Stump singled, advanced all the way to third on an error and scored as part of a double steal.

Pinch-hitter Haylee Cox led off the top of the seventh with a triple for the Cougars, and scored on a Runnells single.

• Greencastle 10, Owen Valley 9 — Greencastle got home runs from Julia Mundy and Ivy Wright to hold off the Patriots on Thursday.

Macy Clark had an RBI single in the second inning for Greencastle, and Wright hit a solo homer in the third to tie the game at 2-2. The Cubs got four runs in the fourth as Clark singled, Brittany Ricketts doubled and Layna Robinson followed with a single to score Clark.

Ricketts eventually came home as part of a double steal and Robinson scored on a passed ball.

Mackenzie Woodall singled and later came home on a Wright single.

Greencastle got four more runs in the fifth as Clark singled again, went to third on a Robinson double and scored on a Woodall single. Mundy then followed with a home run to clear the bases.

Clark had four hits, one RBI and four runs scored for the Cubs, while Robinson, Woodall, Mundy, Wright and Anna Chavez each had two hits as Greencastle pounded out 15 hits on the day.

Tennis

• Owen Valley 4, South Putnam 1 — Stephanie Zhivotovsky picked up the lone win for the Eagles at No. 3 singles.

“The Eagles are playing really well right now, despite the scores,” coach Johnny Briones said. “Our girls did a good job against a talented OV team. No. 2 singles outlasted her opponent in three sets.”

The Eagles will close out the regular season on Tuesday by meeting Rockville, with sectional play starting the following day.

“Northview is the favorite going into the tournament, but the other schools are very competitive as well,” Briones said.
