Share the Dream Spotlight: Beyond Homeless

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

This summer, 25 different charitable organizations, scholarships and endowments are participating in the Putnam County Community Foundation Share the Dream program. The fundraising program offers proportionally awarded grant prizes to participants who receive at least 10 donations of $25 or more between May 1 and Aug. 31.

Each of the 25 organizations will be highlighted in this series.

Beyond Homeless offers shelter services for single women and women with children in Putnam County. Its mission is to empower the homeless of the Putnam County area to become self-sufficient and work to prevent homelessness among our neighbors.

The shelter is able to house up to 24 residents at a time. Residents have sleeping space, meals and help using local resources to work toward changing their situation. Further, Beyond Homeless offers a short-term assistance program for men experiencing homelessness as well as a homeless prevention program which can provide some limited financial assistance.

Beyond Homeless opened in April 2014. Many compassionate members of the community have been donors since before inception. Community members who feel strongly that a secure and stable environment is necessary for individuals who are experiencing homelessness as they actively work toward changing their situation should consider making a donation to the Beyond Homeless Endowment.

Beyond Homeless Inc. Endowment, established in 2017, was created to provide a long-term sustainable funding source for the shelter and its services. It is organizers’ firm belief that an endowment gives donors confidence that their funds are being used well and will have a lasting impact as the principal is never expended. Only the interest is paid out to the organization for use.

They want to ensure that Beyond Homeless will be a viable and thriving organization in our community for many years to come. Not only does BHI hope to continue its existing shelter services but also to expand in order to meet additional unmet needs in our community, recognizing the need to assist men in a greater capacity and actively working toward action steps to make that a reality.
