BLOOMINGTON — Greencastle’s Emma Wilson took the next step toward adding to her state championship trophy collection on Thursday night by winning both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the Bloomington North Regional.

Wilson now advances to the state finals at Indiana University on June 1.

The Tiger Cub junior broke the regional record in both events that she had set last year, winning the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.86 and the 3,200 with a time of 10:31.69.

“Emma ran fast enough to break both of her regional records,” GHS coach Craig Jordan said. “She’s in great shape right now and we’re very excited to see how she will perform next week. She’s going to start freshening up and with stiffer competition I feel she’ll be ready to do something special.”

Not surprisingly, Wilson is expected to be a high seed at the state finals.

“After glancing at a few results from other regionals, I believe she will be going to state with the No. 3 seed in the 1,600 and No. 1 seed in the 3,200,” Jordan said.

Jordan also noted that shot putters Claire Gillen and Jada Amis “held their own” in their event.

“They both advanced to the finals to score three points for the team,” he said. “Our 4x100 and 4x400 teams ran season bests to finish seventh out of their respective first heats. As a team we performed well and exceeded our point total from last year by 5.67 points.”

Greencastle placed ninth in the team standings with 27 points. South Putnam finished 22nd with seven points and Cloverdale was tied for 23rd with six points. North Putnam also had athletes in the meet, but did not score.

No other Putnam County athletes advanced to the state finals, but two of them came very close.

South Putnam’s Ally Nichols was fourth in the 1,600, just missing the state finals by one place. She was 9.14 seconds behind the third-place finisher, Ashton Chase of Seymour.

Cloverdale’s Chelsie Edwards earned a fourth-place finish in the 800, finishing just 2.1 seconds behind third-place runner Phoebe Rensink of Bloomington South.

Among other Western Indiana Conference athletes besides Wilson, three athletes won regional titles — Owen Valley’s Dazia Drake in the pole vault, Brown County’s Vivien Crimmins in the 100 hurdles and Northview’s Eden Siples in the 400.
