Eleven Putnam County football standouts to play in WVFCA All-Star Game

Eleven Putnam County high school football standouts have been chosen to play in the Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game next month.

For seven of them, the game will help serve as sort of a mid-summer training camp as they get ready to go on to play college football in the fall.

For the other four, however, the game will be the final organized game in which they will play.

The college football-bound players in the game are Cloverdale’s Tyce Jackson (DePauw), Nick Winders and T.J. Hagymasi (both to Franklin, North Putnam’s Hayden Rudes and South Putnam’s Christian Zeffel (both to Wabash) and Greencastle’s Cade Winslow (Franklin) and Jacob Meyer (Millikin).

The players likely putting on the pads for the last time are Greencastle’s Brayden Bollman, South Putnam’s Porter High and North Putnam’s Ethan Christy and Gage Bell.

The recent North Putnam graduates will be playing for the Gold Division team, whose head coach is former Eastern Greene boss Joey Paridean (now at Evansville North).

One of the Gold Division assistants will be Terre Haute North head coach Chris Barrett, brother of former North Putnam coach Greg Barrett (who coached the Cougar trio for its first three years of high school before departing for South Vermillion last summer).

Other schools represented on the Gold Division team are Eastern Greene, Edgewood, Linton-Stockton, North Central, Northview, Riverton Parke, Rockville, Sullivan, Terre Haute North, Turkey Run and Vincennes Lincoln from Indiana and Cumberland, Newton and Tri-County from Illinois.

The Cloverdale, Greencastle and South Putnam grads will be playing for the Black Division team, whose head coach is Bill Gray of Red Hill (Ill.).

Greencastle’s Mike Meyer is an assistant coach for the Black Division team, and will be coaching his son (Jacob) for the final time.

Greg Barrett is also an assistant for the Back Division team and has five members of his first Wildcat team on the roster.

Other schools represented on the Black Division team are North Vermillion, Owen Valley, Terre Haute South and West Vigo from Indiana and Casey-Westfield, Marshall, Mattoon, Oblong, Olney, Palestine-Hutsonville, Paris, Red Hill and Robinson from Illinois.

The game will be June 23 at Indiana State’s Memorial Stadium, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The ISU field has recently installed a new FieldTurf playing surface.

A banquet honoring all the players, and special scholarship award winners for the week of practice voted on by team members, will take place at the Providence Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College on June 22.

Also at this banquet, long-time Robinson Coach Tim Nolen will be inducted in to the WVFCA Hall of Fame.

Nolen is a 40-year veteran coach who help guide Robinson, Villa Grove and Mount Zion to conference championships.
