Hubert H. 'Hugh' Hyten

Hubert H. "Hugh" Hyten, 79, Crawfordsville, passed away at his home Friday, May 25, 2018.

He was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in September 2013 and was under the care of the Franciscan St. Francis Health Center in Indianapolis.

Born Dec. 27, 1938 in Greencastle, the son of Donald and Norma (Shoaf) Hyten.

Hugh received his formal education from Roachdale High School and DePauw University where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Hugh was a former member of the Greencastle Elks and Windy Hill Country Club.

Hugh was a 30-year career employee with International Business Machines Corp. After the Greencastle site closed April 1, 1987 he was assigned to the IBM Area Personnel Office in Chicago. Residing in the Indianapolis area, he provided benefits and management support for the Greencastle area IBM retirees, a position he held until his retirement in December 1993.

In 1994 he relocated from Greenwood to Lake Shafer near Monticello. Enjoying the lake for several years, he then moved to Crawfordsville, his final residence.

His first love was listening to music from all genres. Hugh loved the major sports, especially basketball, and was an avid Indiana Hoosiers fan.

He enjoyed studying history and politics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Norma; his brother, Robert Hyten; grandson, Kyle Hyten; niece, Susan (Wertz) Cozart; and nephew, Ronald Love.

Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Stephanie Hyten LaFontaine, Bloomington; his son, Joseph T. (Michele) Hyten, New Market; grandsons, Lucas LaFontaine, Zane and Trenton Hyten; great grandson, Eric Hyten; sisters, Joan Misner Smith, Crawfordsville, and Delores Wertz, Greenwood; nieces Terri Thompson, Allison Love and Delana Conkright; nephews Dr. David Wertz, Mike Hyten and Kim Hyten; sister-in-law Marian (Jonas) Hyten. And "Eddie" his very special Shih Tzu canine friend. "No matter how little money and few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich." -- Lewis Sabin.

Services will be at Brick Chapel United Methodist Church on Friday, June 1. The chapel will be open at 10 a.m. to greet family and friends.

A memorial celebration service will begin at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Brick Chapel Cemetery. Light refreshments will be provided in the church hall after services.

Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, has been selected to provide arrangements for the Hyten family.
